Did anybody check Advanced Boot options in Msconfig. Seemed to me that my computer is booting too slow, checked those options and lo and behold it's been set to one core only. !!!!
After fixing that it boots and run much faster.

  2. DirectX 12 API, ignore running on core 1 possible?

Hey, I've been looking at the improvements dx12 is bringing. One of the largest improvements is being able to run the dx API on all cores simultaneously rather then just the first core.

    example:

    http://www.amd.com/en-us/innovations/software-technologies/directx12

Now, what I was wondering, is it necessary to run the API on core 1, I ask this because you core 1 is normally bogged down by code that is unbreakable for the other cores. So can you run the API on just core 2 - 8 or 2 - 4. It will make the processing
time on those cores slightly higher but still under the time core 1 finishes without the API hence getting better performance. Is there any technical reason the API has to be on core 1?

Harware Reserved linked to number of processors?

Thanks for the feedback. The above screenshot shows the setting which I unchecked. Prior to making adjustments, with 2x2GB DRAM 3 I would get out of memory errors and programs would freeze or stall. I added up to 2x4 DRAM and had enable the full 8 GB. But
with that setting for number of processors checked and showing 1 enabled, only one core was running and the CPU peaked and stalled programs continually, though usually briefly. Since I have unchecked it now shows 4 cores and 8 processes running.

Performance is definitely better with it unchecked and 4 cores running but now the hardware reserved takes up 50% so memory shortages could return But overall performance is better with the number of processors unchecked and 4 cores enabled. . Is that performance
boost bought at the expense of 50% DRAM becoming hardware reserved? Or can that be tweaked to reduce that reserved memory to avoid memory shortages?

    Thanks again.

When you go to msconfig/boot/advanced their should not be any check marks in the two boxes at the top.

Right, my was checked at 1 core. First hint was when I went thru Device manager to check all the driver versions and seen only one core under Processors. Similar thing happened when I was installing Win 8 first time. Just in case it changes it's mind I checkmarked it with 4 cores, than and now. Without that, programs like Speedfan, showed only one core too.

You guys have me curious now... do you mean processors(CPUs) or cores. I have only one dual core processor(CPU), but on my advanced boot options, both boxes are unchecked, and the box under the Number of processors box reads 1. Should it read 2? Hope I've phrased my question clearly, thanks for any advice.

Normally you'd have both boxes unchecked then Windows will use the Max core and Max RAM available. The boxes are checked for testing purpose only and I don't know how you got the boxes checked.

Oh, both the boxes were unchecked, and I left them that way. You did answer my question, though, so thank you very much! Have a great day!

Best to check in Device manager, it should show as 2, one driver for each core under "processor". There's also no harm in checking the box for Processor with maximum cores it shows in there. At very least, it would ensure booting on all the cores and use all threads. There could be also some confusion with number of cores and their threads. some processors can show more actual processors than there are physical cores because of some CPUs can have 2 threads per core and so 2 core CPU may appear as a 4 core.

Correct. For example, I have an I7-3770K and have hyper threating enabled then it would show: 8

Normally, you would use those boxes for diagnostic. For example, if you suspect that one of your RAM sticks is bad then you would want to run Windows on the first stick only instead of physically remove it from the PC.
I have 16GB and here I isolate my RAM to the first 4GB then system properties would show:

Yup, I have an AMD FX-6300 @ ~4.5GHz and Win10TP reports all six logical processors correctly.
@CountMike: something changed the numbers in the box--I'm wondering if maybe you had recently used a utility like "RunFirst" in order to get an older game to run on your system that had balked at two cores...?

I have on at least one occasion, however, had the box for system ram checked at a lower amount than what I had installed--and as I had no recollection of changing it myself for any reason it was a while before I remembered to run msconfig and check...! It could be a kind of obscure bug...but anyway, glad you got it sorted...*Wink

Could be just a problem with drivers or BIOS readings on some AMD platforms, I don't know but I have noticed it several times with my and others' systems. It's been like that since Win7 and seems to affect some parts of system and some programs, just couldn't catch a rule. Ever since I noticed it first time ( Asus MB and dual core AMD) I routinely check as soon I install OS and sometimes it happens, sometimes not. I just checkmark at all cores so there's no doubt. It can't hurt and doesn't take too much time.
I never use any automatic settings, programs or BIOS and system settings, like to set everything manually and to best performance with highest reliability factor possible. For that, I have been rewarded with fast as possible and generally trouble free systems and computers.

I run an AMD 8150 with 8 cores running 4.5 ghz. I should set it to 1 core? I thought Win 10 would use all my cores, at least better than Win 7 did!

Why would you waste 7 cores ??????

i believe 1 is the default setting, seen it before on my other dual core comps.
some sites advocate enableling all cores, as a way of reducing boot times.
