Windows 10: Running windows 10 from USB device on this computer, and it wont update to a USB device

At some point the a windows 10 updated failed on this computer that was to difficult to fix at the time. As a work around I used a USB drive with a boot up copy of windows 10 1803 to start up and run this computer. I have been running this computer for two years this way and it won't update because Windows won't update to a USB device. Without the USB drive, I cant' get this computer to boot up at all. 1803 is not out of service and I want to update to the latest version of windows 10 or maybe even 11. Any ideas How I can get this done. I thank you in advance for your suggestions a

Im presuming its hidden where show non present devices registry entry is needed. Ive had weirdness with usb myself in Win 7.

I had a similar issue that came with a significant Windows 10 update, I tried everything for about a week, I also had issues with a USB Printer not working too, in the end I found that an additional USB driver unrelated to my board was showing in Device Manager, I think it was a Marvell and I don't have any marvel ports, deleted it from Device manager, re-booted, all my problems went.

 

[SOLVED] Windows 8.1 Not Detecting USB Devices

It is possible you may need to run VIAO update, after your upgrade to 8.1, to check for new drivers and patches.

Edit: Also, have you gone to device manager and check the item in the menu "show hidden devices".
See if their are any problems, uninstall any usb devices, and their associated listings in the other sections of the device manager that should not be there.

If need be... try GhostBuster to remove any ghosted devices you need/want gone.

You may need to do a refresh of Windows 8.1 as a last resort.
