Windows 10: S-Mode returned after Windows10 Update

Purchased a PC with Windows 10 version 1909 in S-Mode. Successfully switched out of S-Mode without any issues and installed the necessary special purpose apps for the intended application of the PC.


There have been no issues with this PC for 6 months, several days ago a Windows 10 update to version 2004 was ready for download. Wanting the keep the PC up to date, the 2004 was downloaded and installed. After installation, all the special purpose apps quit working and it was determined that even though the PC was switched out of S-Mode prior to the update, after the update it was back in S-Mode again. It has since been switched BACK out of S-Mode again and much effort was required to put the PC back into good order for it's intended application.


HOW CAN S-MODE BE PREVENTED FROM RETURNING AFTER A WINDOWS 10 VERSION UPDATE?

To troubleshoot your issue, we suggest doing these following troubleshooting methods:

Method 1

• Turn off your PC.
• Press and hold Shift then turn on your PC.
• Wait for the setup (set up fixes the problem automatically).

Method 2

• Create a media creation tool by following the steps in this
  link.
• Select your preferred installation option and wait for the process to finish.

Windows 10 fails to update


When you finish testing the Avast suggestion, make sure that you restart your machine.

Then if the issue persists, please return to the trouble shooting list in post# 89

I think there are three steps that remain; the WU troubleshooter, reset WU components, and manual WU reset.

One of the possible reasons why your PC fails to boot into normal mode is there were broken components on the boot configuration data of your system. To isolate your concern regarding your Windows 10, we suggest that you perform the following steps
to trigger Safe Mode through the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) option. To do this, follow the steps below:

• Improper shutdown process

• • Turn on your computer. When the Windows logo is visible, unplug the power source of your computer. Perform this step three times.
  • On the fourth time that you turn on your computer, just simply wait for the
    Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) window to appear.

2. On the Choose an option screen, select
Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings and click
Restart.

3. Once your computer restarts, you will see a list of options. Press the
F4 key to start your computer in Safe Mode.

We also recommend that you perform a system restore after booting into safe mode.
This option takes your PC back to an earlier point in time. Restoring won’t affect your personal files, but it will remove apps, drivers, and updates installed after the restore point was made. To do this, follow the steps
below:

• Right-click the Start button, and then select Control Panel.
• Search Control Panel for Recovery.
• Select Recovery > Open System Restore > Next.
• Choose the restore point related to the problematic app, driver, or update, and then select Next > Finish.
