Windows 10: S/PDIF passthrough bitstreaming setting on OS level in Windows 11

Dear Community Members,is there currently an easy way to set S/PDIF passthrough at an operating system level to a default audio device?I tried all the control panel settings, sound settings from the settings application and settings accessible from the device manager, but I can't seem to find one. The S/PDIF passthrough works fine when a third party software setting enables it tried: VLC, Media Player Black edition, but for games or other applications, which are capable of outputting 5.1 channel AC3 format Dolby Digital through a default device, but do not have this setting, I did not find

Just correcting an error about VLC here. VLC does indeed support audio bitstream passthrough. Just go to Tools/Preferences, and select "Show Settings/All" in order to see the Advanced Settings. Then go to Audio and select Use S/PDIF when available.

Just wanted to make sure nobody else is going to give up on VLC when it was one of the first products to support this properly!

You may try :
on VLC > Tools > Preferences > Audio ==> Output module : DirectX audio output or WaveOut audio output and for Device : your SPDIF




on MPC > View > Options > Internal Filters ==> Audio decoder > Mixing tab : uncheck "Enable Mixing"

HDMI Passthrough on Windows 10

Bingo! Had been trying to do pass-through on Windows 10 with WMP12. Couldn't get 1080p 5.1 surround sound mkvs to play. Gave the dreaded low on memory error. Other videos in other file formats were fine, but MKVs remained a big problem.

Finally instructions on pass through for VLC Media Player!! Works like a charm passing 5.1 to my receiver via HDMI and I know that VLC media player will handle all my media.
