Windows 10: Safe Mode

Have Intel NUC with windows 10 Pro.Was doing a windows reset when power went out.Now all I get is a black screen with no mouse cursor.Does not even go to log in screen.Is there a way to get into safe mode ?

I would like to inform you that, that the operation of the function keys are as set by the manufacturer, and it differs depending up on the manufacturer.



You may press and hold on the Shift Key from the Windows sign in screen and click on Restart to boot into Safe mode\Safe Mode with Networking. So that, after you restart you will boot into normal mode.



If you start your computer with Safe mode\Safe Mode with Networking using System Configuration, it will boot into the same mode after you restart.

Safe mode, or not safe mode

First of all, Microsoft had us using the F8 key for years and over many operating systems, now they change it again (F4 or F5)!!! Do they know how frustrating this is??? If you boot once in safe mode, you'll see safe mode displayed in the corners of the
screen. If you reboot again into safe mode, you don't know if you're in safe mode or not. I couldn't figure out if I was in safe mode or safe mode with networking. And, then I had to jump through more hoops (using msconfig) to get into normal mode.

 

1) What problems were you having that you performed a reset?
a) was it a reset save files or a reset remove files?
2) Are your files backed up?
3) Had you made a backup image?
4) If you needed to would you be able to perform a clean install (delete partitions, format, make an unallocated drive, reinstall windows 10 version 1703)
5) Do you know the status of the windows drive?
a) had you had any chkdsk problems or known drive problems?
b) had you run any HD tests such as SMART, short, or long generic?
6) Are you using HD or SSD?


Perform the following steps:
1) Find 3 flash drives that you can format

2) With the first flash drive create a bootable windows 10 iso
Download Windows 10
Download Windows 10

3) With the second flash drive create a bootable Memtest86+ version 5.01 drive

4) With the third flash drive create a bootable Kyhi drive:

Computer was freezing up.Reset remove files.This PC is only used as a network audio adapter only.No back up image for this computer.Have image back up for my other computer.Drive is okay.SSD drive.No known hard drive problems.No windows start up screen.Only options at start up are enter set up,update bios,and enter boot menu.

 

With step #2 you can reinstall windows 10 version 1703.

Each computer manufacture has F keys to boot a device or boot to the bios.
Once you have created the bootable Windows 10 iso insert it into any USB port.

If you repetitively click the applicable Lenovo F key you should be able to boot to the external hard drive or bootable windows 10 iso.

If you have any difficulty booting you can
1) switch USB3 to USB2
2) use another flash drive to create a bootable windows 10 iso
3) boot to the bios and change the bios boot order

Once you have booted to the windows 10 iso you can follow this link with text and images on clean install:

With the clean install perform windows updates without installing other applications.
Then various tests can be performed on the computer environment without the other applications.

Note- FYI: only if you can at least boot to a login screen. You can't do that from a boot disk e.g.

 

Did step 2 as you suggested.At were it asks to install windows.I get message windows can’t be installed on drive 0 Parton 1.Says can’t install on this disk .The selected disc has a MBR partion table.On efi systems windows can only install on GPT disks ? Any ideas appreciate all the help.Can I go to were it says format and change ?

Still confused.Going into bios under UEFI boot it has UEFI:USB Generic USB flash drive and below that it has UEFI built in efi shell.In legacy boot order has in this order SATA port 0 Adaya sp550 which is drive in computer.2nd is USB generic USB flash drive boot drive.3Rd lan Realtek pie bo3 d00.Little confused do I change boot order ?

 

See if you can use the GPT method:

To manually wipe a drive and convert it to GPT:

• Turn off the PC, and put in the Windows installation DVD or USB key.
  
• Boot the PC to the DVD or USB key in UEFI mode. For more info, see Boot to UEFI Mode or Legacy BIOS mode.
  
• From inside Windows Setup, press Shift+F10 to open a command prompt window.
  
• Open the diskpart tool:
  Copy
  diskpart
  
• Identify the drive to reformat:
  Copy
  list disk
  
• Select the drive, and reformat it:
  Copy
  select disk <disk number>
  clean
  convert gpt
  exit
  
• Close the command prompt window.
  
• Continue the Windows Setup installation.
  When choosing an installation type, select Custom. The drive will appear as a single area of unallocated space.
  Select the unallocated space and click Next. Windows begins the installation.

Okay finally got installed.Trying to check for updates keep getting code ox80070057..Also how do I activate windows how do I find key ?

 

There can be multiple causes for the 0x80070057 error

After finding an explanation in English the explanation often needs to be decoded:

0x80070057 -2147024809 ERROR_INVALID_PARAMENTER - E_INVALIDARG One or more arguments are not valid error - Invalid proxy server name was specified in the user’s IE settings and hence WinhttpSetProxySettings call fails with E_INVALIDARG error. BITS puts the job in TRANSIENT_ERROR with the same error code. For ex, if the proxy server is set to http://foo/bar/proxy.pac, this error will be seen. This error is also seen when credentials are supplied such that scheme is not NTLM/Negotiate, but username/password is NULL, since that is not valid (WinhttpSetCredentials fails with E_INVALIDARG. BITS 1.5 puts the job into ERROR state with BG_E_INVALID_RESPONSE in the above 2 cases, because of error code mapping E_INVALIDARG is always mapped to (BG_E_INVALID_SERVER_RESPONSE)

Was the windows installation an upgrade during the free period from windows 7 or 8 to windows 10?

As in the above link you may need to delete partitions > make an unallocated drive > reinstall windows 10.

This will be trial and error.
1) Make sure that you are not on a metered internet connection.
2) Try windows updates again
3) If that fails check the integrity of the operating system:
open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
4) sfc /scannow
5) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
6) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread
7) Open control panel > large or small icons > troubleshooting > on the left pane click view all > windows update > advanced > run as administrator > un-check apply fixes automatically
