1st post, please be kind !Im trying to back up all my videos clips and pictures to a USB drive. Video folders and files copied fine. In a 2nd folder i called pictures, I copied over c100GB but every time I safely remove hardware & they plug it back in, all the sub folders and files are gone - says emptyHelp !Also, can these avi's and jpg's deteriorate over time on a USB stick ?Lastly, would I be better off getting a c£50 1TB external Hard Drive - do they deteriorate on there ?All help, gratefully appreciated

  2. Safely Remove Hardware tool

Thank you for the update, Murray. Since you mentioned that you've already tried running the rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll command to no avail, we suggest that you create a shortcut or even a batch file using the same command. Just run
the shortcut or batch file and see if the Safely Remove Hardware dialog window will appear. To create a shortcut, follow these steps:

    • Right-click on the desktop and click on New > Shortcut.
    • In the Type the location of the item box, type in, or copy and paste the following command:
      • rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll
    • Click Next and then give it a name like Safely Remove Hardware, and then click on
      Finish.

    Keep us in the loop.

Can I delete this unknown file safely?

Well then simply erase (Shift + Del) the $RECYCLE.BIN folder of that drive, I just find it odd that Windows doesn't pick up the drive's recycle bin when you connect it.
And yes it's completely safe to delete the whole $RECYCLE.BIN folder, it wont affect any of the other files/folders on the drive, and whenever you delete (Del) another file it will be re-created.
