Windows 10: Samsung develops new 5G wideband and MIMO radio technology

Samsung Electronics. Co., Ltd. has developed a new 5G wideband radio technology that expands bandwidth support for its next-generation radios, including Massive MIMO radios, to help operators drive more flexible and cost-effective 5G deployments. With this new technology, Samsung will extend the bandwidth support of its 5G radios to 400MHzâdouble the 200MHz supported by its current commercial radios.

With wider bandwidth support, Samsungâs radios will help operators maximize the utility of their mid-band spectrum for 5G networks, while using less hardware. The new technology will help operators minimize the number of radios required when managing spectrum in various deployment scenarios. This includes when an operator owns non-contiguous frequencies within 400MHz of bandwidth. Operators can also use this solution for RAN sharing, where they actively share network infrastructures with other operators through joint deployments.

Mid-Band Boost

Mid-band frequencies deliver a combination of wide coverage, high speeds and low latency. Samsungâs new radios will help accelerate operatorsâ 5G rollouts in mid-band spectrum.

Samsungâs new wideband solutions, including Massive MIMO radios, will be commercially available in early 2022, offering more operational and deployment advantages to operators.

The new 5G radio technology is another innovation for mid-band 5G spectrum support, following Samsungâs recent announcement of the Mobility Enhancer. Mobility Enhancer is Samsungâs new AI-based technology that improves beamforming performance in its Massive MIMO radios, potentially increasing the throughput by up to 30 percent in mobility environments.

Through ongoing research and development, Samsung drives the industry to advance 5G networks with its market-leading product portfolio from fully virtualized RAN and Core to private network solutions and AI-powered automation tools. Samsung Shares Massive MIMO Roadmap in New Whitepaper

Massive MIMO, key technology for enhancing 5G network capacity and user experiences, will continue to be essential driver for 5G build-out.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today published a whitepaper titled “Massive MIMO for New Radio”, highlighting the capabilities and benefits of Massive Multi-Input, Multi-Output (MIMO) in 5G NR systems and sharing Samsung’s roadmap for Massive MIMO solutions. The whitepaper presents the various form factors, essential air technologies and development plans, as well as Samsung’s vision for this critical technology essential for 5G build-out.

Why is Massive MIMO a key technology?

With the exponential growth in mobile traffic, the newly deployed 5G solutions must provide fast and stable network connections. Massive MIMO is a major breakthrough in technology which improves the network capacity and the user’s 5G experience. Massive MIMO, outfitted with a large number of antennas, can control the antennas to concentrate the emitted radio signals into a narrow beam focused on a designated user, resulting in a significant improvement in throughput and efficiency while reducing interferences among nearby users.

Samsung leads the Massive MIMO evolution

Samsung provides a wide array of Massive MIMO radio lineup that aim to support all of the globally defined 5G spectrums in mid-band and serve diverse environments and site requirements. In 5G’s initial stage, Samsung Massive MIMO radio featured a slim, lightweight, compact design to ensure easy installation and quick deployment. These specifications were a key driver for Korean operators launching one of the world’s first 5G services in 2019.

Samsung will continue to develop technology that supports a vast array of spectrum with higher capacity. The company will lay the groundwork for more innovations by introducing the next-generation Massive MIMO with enhancements in the latest 3GPP release 16 and 17, as well as Distributed FD-MIMO (Full Dimension MIMO) in the coming years.

Samsung boosts performance of Massive MIMO up to 30 percent

Samsung Electronics. Co. Ltd. announced the successful development of a new network technology, Mobility Enhancer, which improves beamforming performance of its Massive MIMO radios up to 30 percent in a mobile environment. The new technology will play a crucial role in improving mobile experiences for users in both 4G and 5G network environments.

Massive MIMO radios are a critical component of 4G and 5G networks, offering a flexible solution to help mobile operators deliver improved coverage and capacity below 6GHz spectrum using 3D beamforming.

Samsung conducted a field trial in its own testbed using its Massive MIMO radio and by adding the new Mobility Enhancer technology, gaining a throughput improvement of up to 30 percent experienced by a walking user.

Mobility Enhancer, powered by Samsung’s AI and advanced signal processing technology, will enable its Massive MIMO radio to improve the accuracy of beamforming towards a moving user for maximized 5G experiences. For instance, with Mobility Enhancer, users can experience boosted performance while they are walking on a street.

Samsung plans to apply Mobility Enhancer to its Massive MIMO radios through a software upgrade offered in the global market this year.

Samsung and Marvell unveil new SoC to advance 5G networks

Samsung Electronics and Marvell (NASDAQ:MRVL) today announced that the companies jointly developed a new System-on-a-Chip (SoC) to enhance 5G network performance. The SoC—which will be used in Samsung’s Massive MIMO and other advanced radios—is targeted for market introduction to Tier One operators in Q2 2021.

The SoC is designed to help implement new technologies, which improve cellular radios by increasing their capacity and coverage, while decreasing power consumption and size. The new SoC is equipped to support both 5G and 4G networks simultaneously, and it can also save up to 70 percent in chipset power consumption compared to previous solutions.

“We are excited to extend our collaboration with Marvell to unveil a new SoC that will combine both companies’ strengths in innovation to advance 5G network solutions,” said Junehee Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of R&D, Networks Business at Samsung Electronics. “Samsung prioritizes the development of high-impact 5G solutions that offer a competitive edge to our operators. We look forward to introducing this latest solution to the market shortly.”

Samsung and Marvell have been working closely to deliver multiple generations of leading network solutions. Last year, the companies announced a collaboration to develop new 5G products, including innovative radio architectures to address the compute power required for Massive MIMO deployments.
