I tried Samsung Magician 5 about a month ago and it promptly told me that my Samsung 840 EVO 250GB drives (all 3 of them with the latest firmware) were UNSUPPORTED DRIVES. Huh? What's up with that?

Needless to say, I'm back with version 4.9.7 and it looks like that's where I'll be staying.

  2. I was so terribly wrong. Everybody please read the release notes for Magician v5 before complaining ( I should have too Samsung Magician 5.0.0.790 released :) ).

Anybody who has issues with new Magician, stick with the old one, if that works for you, until you upgrade your hardware to something that must use v5.

Well, I had another try with Samsung Magician 5 in case something has changed since last month and I still get the same thing.

Still can't figure it out. All 3 of my 840 EVO's are genuine and have the latest firmware. I have a dual boot with Windows 7 and Windows 10 and I get the same thing with both operating systems.

Gone back to 4.9.7 again (with a Macrium Reflect image).

  6. RAPID Mode completely depends on how fast RAM you have. The numbers are correct.

I have a 840 EVO but only 120Gb. It seems to work fine with the new Magician. Have you clicked on the system compatibility menu option to check you have the right Intel RST? You can only have Rapid mode on one SSD, have you checked all 3 SSDs to make sure none of them allow it? (by clicking on the <1: 3> on the blue line and cycling through them. In the notes with the install it does mention that if you have identical drive types (ie in your case all 840 EVOs) it can pick the wrong one for the rapid mode. I have a 850 as the secondary drive so wouldn't get this issue.

    Thanks, Andy.

I only have 2 of the 3 SSD's connected at any one time but Magician 5 still tells me they're not supported even though it reports no compatibility issues and the benchmark tests seem to run OK.

    Never used Rapid Mode.

    I'll stick with 4.9.7

    AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!!

    1. It reports my 250GB Samsung 850 EVO as 'Not Supported' (not supported for what?) its the only SSD installed?
    2. I had 10% Over Provisioning enabled from previous version - this option has now gone and has not reversed the process..I can still see 10% of my drive missing
    3. It reports RAPID mode not available (I have 8Gb of 1600Mhz DDR3 RAM) and used it before on previous versions?

simply uninstall and install 4.9.6 from Majorgeeks

when I reinstalled the previous version it picked up my 10% OP (phew!) and allows RAPID to be turned on...which I dont use as its SNAKE OIL... many people have used it and tested it and it shows no real world performance improvements, I used it on and off over 2 years and could not notice any difference what-so-ever.. maybe this is because Windows 7+ already uses Superfetch to pre-cache your software in advance..but..even with that turned off also I could not notice any difference, yet when I checked Windows 10 was still caching into RAM (Windows 7 did aswell)

Samsung have seriously screwed up with this software - it should reverse the OP process if is not going to allow it?? now anyone thats turned it on will lose that space on their drive (if they dont know whats going on) as the newer version doesnt restore it

Also detecting drive as NOT SUPPORTED.. when im not running any 3rd party drivers or anything..just one 250Gb EVO 850

  11. Just go to Windows Disk Management and restore the missing space. The point of over provisioning is that you get in a lot of trouble if the drive suddenly gets full. But all this can be managed from within WDM. There's nothing magical to it.

    Hi there

I can't understand all these people wanting to add (as a previous poster says) SNAKE OIL to their computers

an SSD is so much FASTER than bog standard HDD's - so why would you want to ADD anything else to it.

Just LEAVE SSD's alone -- Windows / Linux / any other OS you like will use the SSD's without ANY problem.

I'm always amazed with people loading unnecessary software to their machines and then wondering why they don't get any improvement

Same with a lot of A/V software -- you are using YESTERDAY's Software to solve TODAY'S requirements.
Honestly --just install your SSD and forget all the other stuff.

I'm still reading (in 2017 !!!!) about whether you should DEFRAG an SSD -- Well I can say that over 30 years or more of using Windows - I've NEVER needed or even seen any improvement to defragging HDD's - and they were a LOT slower back then a few years ago.

Use MODERN software for TODAY's hardware.

    Cheers

    I know that..

    You know that...

...but not everyone has the technical skill level to know how to do this, or, might not even notice that since they upgraded the OP option isnt available? - I can only hope that its still actually using it as Over-Provisioning (which it probably will be as it seems to be operated on the controller level), even though you can no longer access that option in SM5

also, the point of Over-Provisioning is to make sure all the cells on the drive are written to in equal amounts, this increases drive endurance and performance..hence why I use it, I dont mind giving 10% (or any number) back too the controller to help with cell redundancy.

I know someone who's never used it on their 512GB 850 EVO and its 6 months old and SSD Life reports their drive is good for another 8 years with only 2.2TB written, I have just a 250GB version and 2 years old with 33TB writes and mine reports 8.2 years... wonder why? his drive is twice the size so should last twice as long!
