    SATA Drivers Update

    Hi all,

I noticed after a clean install of Win 10 Pro that in the Device Manager I had two "Standard SATA AHCI Controller" entries that showed the driver dated in 2006. I run 2 x SSD's a HDD and a BluRay writer.

So I downloaded the latest version of SATA drivers at the Asus ROG site for my motherboard. After running, one entry in Device Manager has changed to "Intel(R) 8 Series/C220 Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller" but the other remains "Standard SATA AHCI Controller" - still with the 2006 driver version 10.0.10240.16384 dated 2006/06/21

Is this correct? Windows reports that it is the most current driver.

ALSO: The driver installed "Intel Rapid Storage Technology" program. Do I need this? If I do need it, must it be enabled at start up? I am wondering if it might conflict with Samsung's Magician which I also have installed?

    Sorry lots of questions....

    :)

Asus x55u dvd drive not working after windows 10 upgrade

This was 100 percent the solution. Love how the Microsoft guy got it totally wrong! The trick is to update the SATA drivers which are tied into the AMD file. You are not looking for the dvd drivers as the problem is that the update "breaks" the SATA drive.
Once the SATA drivers which are the AMD drivers are updated, windows then finds the dvr when you reboot. No need to install dvr drivers.

Have you tried updating the driver manually? Find the sata driver in device manager and click on "update driver software". Click on "browse my computer for driver software" and browse to where the driver is located. Include subfolders should also be checked.
From there if a sata driver is in the package it should be updated.

    SATA Drivers Update

You probably updated some of your HDD or SSD's
You might need to update the second "Standard SATA AHCI Controller" entry from Device Manager.
And no, you do not need "Intel Rapid Storage Technology" program, it is designed to show you the status of your drives it is not essential, in addition it runs as a startup item.
If you uninstall it, the updated SATA AHCI drivers will remain, at least this is what happened with my systems.
Also, one of my laptops have 2 HDD's so I used and Intel SATA Raid driver.

Hi Greg, don't worry , my SATA drivers are from 2006 as well , actually i have a ton of drivers showing 2006 and device manager does indeed say they are the latest and the best choice for the system lol.

I have to admit , computer runs well and when i did update the SATA ACHI drivers to the latest from" Fernando's Win Raid "forums there was zero difference in performance.

    Hello,

You are right, no difference in perf, BUT with Intel Sata driver noticeable difference in HDD's temperatures and HDD's are more "silent".
In all cases, before updating SATA drivers, Chipset driver must be updated first and reboot.
Upon reboot, SATA drivers should be updated, it depends on the user's choice. *Smile

As far as the "Standard SATA AHCI Controller" don't worry about the date but look at the driver version. 10.0.10240.16384 came with the 10240 RTM of Windows 10. I think the date is when the driver was first released and does not change when the versions change.
Also I think the 2nd controller is ASMedia chip so that is probably why it did not update as it has its own driver.

    SATA Drivers Update

This stuff always confused me but someone posted a great link to dispel how important the Intel chipset drivers are or are not in this case.

Thanks Jim , that explains a lot actually , very interesting .

    Thanks

    @ fredc,

I'm aware of the link you posted, I must say that it's up to everyone to decide *Smile
In my case, laptop's mobo temps were about 40-42 Celcius with MS W 10 drivers, once Chipset and SATA Raid drivers were installed, mobo temps 30-32 Celcius, so you might guess why I opted for the driver update, other users may not see such differences so they should stick with MS drivers, none of those affect good functionality.
    Hope this helps,

    Kind Regards,

    SATA Drivers Update

Thanks for all the great insight. That other SATA entry is probably ASMedia as suggested - I never did install that driver this time. Only Motherboard driver I installed was the Chipset. I let Windows handle the rest.
