  1. SATA SSD Disk D dissappears on my Windows 10 machine intermittently and only a hard reboot...

    Hi -

On my Powerspec Windows 10 machine, my D: disk (a SATA Solid State Drive of 500G - Controller 0, Port 3) disappears at random times leaving me without my datadisk. I've searched high & low for an answer and am finally here. I already did a disk check and found NO errors. This really seems not to be a h/w issue but rather some kind of driver issue. It is a brand new computer which is why I do NOT suspect a problem with the disk.

The machine was updated with the latest Windows 10 Microsoft updates and no success in fixing this vanishing disk problem.

I also did update my Intel Rapid Storage Technology software to v. 16.8.0.1000 (from 15.9.0.1015). Also, in the Performance Tab, I changed theLink Power Management to DISABLED from enabled. I am hopeful that this setting may solve the problem of my disappearing D disk. However it is difficult to know. ( Note, I did not change the setting Disk Data cache Enabled. ) If there is any solution available, please let me know. This is a difficult problem to live with since there is no warning when the disk goes inactive and there is no way to bring it back except to do a hard reboot. Fortunately, it does reappear after a hard reboot (not a restart) however there is no telling how much time you have to work before it dissappears again.

One more note, the Event log shows lots of errors when the disk goes away. ie.,

An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\DR2 during a paging operation.

There are a bunch more Windows Log system events that may apply to this issue however so as to not be too leading I will refrain from including all of them here. Any help that can be offered will be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks.

    :)

  2. Microsoft Drive Optimizer mistakenly lists SATA hard disk drive as SSD and will not defragment the drive

HP Pavilion p6754y Desktop PC was upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7.

The Device Manager shows the boot C:\ drive as:

Disk: ST310005 28AS SATA Disk Device

    Disk Driver: Microsoft 10.0.10240.16384

    Disk Driver Date: 6/21/2006

The disk is the original Segate 1 TB disk that came new in the HP PC.

In Windows 7 the disk could be defragmented using the standard steps of:

Select C:\ disk > Properties > Tools > Optimize Drives > Select (CSATA SSD Disk D dissappears on my Windows 10 machine intermittently and only a hard reboot... :) Hard disk drive > Optimize

In Windows 10 the disk can NOT be manually Optimized because it is identified as SSD:

Select C:\ disk > Properties > Tools > Optimize Drives > Select OS (CSATA SSD Disk D dissappears on my Windows 10 machine intermittently and only a hard reboot... :) Solid state drive

SATA SSD Disk D dissappears on my Windows 10 machine intermittently and only a hard reboot... 67124b03-fd3e-44fd-b6f9-52f9b03167c0.jpg

Is this a problem with the Microsoft program dfrgui.exe ?

Here is what the diskpart command shows:

    DISKPART> list disk

Disk ### Status Size Free Dyn Gpt

    -------- ------------- ------- ------- --- ---

    Disk 0 Online 931 GB 0 B

    Disk 1 No Media 0 B 0 B

    Disk 2 No Media 0 B 0 B

    Disk 3 No Media 0 B 0 B

    Disk 4 No Media 0 B 0 B

    DISKPART> select disk 0

Disk 0 is now the selected disk.

How do I get this drive identity corrected in the disk properties so that it can be optimized ?

Hard Rectangular Drive Could be the Hard Disk Answer to SSDs

You're probably right but until SSD's come down to a more reasonable price-level, I'm all for this kind of stuff. Can probably be a perfect stepping-stone from HDD to SSD.

If it ever gets to stores that is *Smile SATA SSD Disk D dissappears on my Windows 10 machine intermittently and only a hard reboot... :)

SSD Detected - Secondary Drive (Hard drive) is not

Ever since doing a fresh install of Windows 10, in "This PC", my secondary hard drive is not in the list. I have already tried right clicking "This PC" and clicking Manage -> Disk Management, but there is nothing there except my SSD with Windows 10 installed.

I have tried changing SATA cables, SATA ports, but it still does not appear in This PC. I have also tried installing my hard drive on a another computer to see if the files were corrupted. They were not, all files were still the same before the installation
of Windows 10. I did not leave the hard drive plugged in during the installation.

In the BIOS, my computer recognizes both my SSD and my hard drive, but in This PC, it's still missing.

Anything else I can do? Thank you! SATA SSD Disk D dissappears on my Windows 10 machine intermittently and only a hard reboot... :)
