Windows 10: Scan and Fix on USB Drive

Hey everyone,I have a USB drive that's had some issues for some time. It takes time to load all the files, and sometimes the File Explorer crashes and I have to remove and re plug the drive. However, I've always been able to access my files just fine after a few tries.Yesterday I plugged it in, and my laptop wouldn't recognise it. A mesage that "A new device was detected" would appear only after I disconnected the USB drive. I restarted my computer and Windows asked me if I wanted to Scan and Fix the USB, which I figured why not, since it's having more problems than usual. When the scan was do

• When exactly are you receiving the error message?
  
• Have you tried connecting the drive to any other USB port?
  
• Are you able to access the drive on any other computer?
  
• What is the make and model of the computer and the HD drive?

You can scan the drive for errors by following the steps mentioned below and see if that helps:

1. Press Windows key + E, to open
   File Explorer.
   
2. Click on This PC on the left pane.
   
3. Right click on the HD Drive and select
   Properties.
   
4. Click on Tools tab, under
   Error Checking click on Check. This will scan the drive for error and fix them.
   

Note: If any bad sectors are found on the hard drive while Windows try to repair the sectors, data on the sectors might be lost.

How do I fix my USB drive?

I suggest you to follow the methods below and check if it helps.

Method 1: Run the Hardware and devices troubleshooter

Windows 10 has a built-in troubleshooter to check and fix issues with hardware and devices. I would suggest you to run this troubleshooter to check if the issue is with your USB Port. Refer these steps:

• 
  Press Windows key +X, select Control panel.
  
• 
  Change the view by option on the top right to Large icons.
  
• 
  Click on troubleshooting and click on the view all option on the left panel.
  
• 
  Run the Hardware and devices troubleshooter.
  

Method 2: I suggest you to remove USB Drivers and re-install the drivers again and check if it helps.

• 
  Open Device Manager.
  
• 
  Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  
• 
  Note: You might have to scroll down the list to find this item.
  
• 
  Right-click the first USB controller under
  Universal Serial Bus controllers, and then click Uninstall to remove it.
  
• 
  Repeat the above step for each USB controller that is listed under
  Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  
• 
  Restart the computer. After the computer starts, Windows will automatically scan for hardware changes and install the drivers.

Windows defender custom scan does not scan external drives

I tried the custom scan in Defender Windows 10. It brings up the list of drives but the "OK" button remains grayed out when I select any drive in the list, so still unable to scan external drives... Any suggestion would be appreciated.
