Windows 10: Schiit Hel usb DAC not recognized

I have a problem with my Schiit Hel DAC in Windows 10. It does not show up as a device, I can't use it as input nor output. I have tried new cables, different ports, no luck.The device is connected to a tabletop PC, to USB 2.0 ports, as instructed by the manufacturer, on the back of the case.The DAC worked fine for 1.5 years, then started behaving weirdly somewhere in the middle of 2021, initially very rarely, not showing up after being switched on or when the PC powered up. The solution used to be that I flipped the power switch of the Hel and then all was OK. But it started happening more of

USB DAC Causes USB Initialization Error

I am using a "Fulla Schiit" USB DAC on a Windows 10 64-bit PC with an MSI Z170a motherboard.

Everything normally works fine but my power went down this morning and after turning on my PC I found there was no sound out of my headphones.

In my playback devices "Realtek Digital Output" was selected and the DAC wasn't shown.

n my device manager, it was shown as a device with a port reset failure, so I uninstalled it and rebooted my PC.

After rebooting my PC my motherboard got stuck on the error code "9C" which is a USB initialization error, as soon as I unplugged the DAC the computer continued to boot fine.

When I plug the DAC back in windows doesn't seem to recognize any device, however, it is powered as I can hear a noise in the headphones as it's plugged in.

What should I do to fix this?

 

Windows 10 problem with USB DAC

I have a USB DAC (digital-to-analog converter) that allows me to play music through my speakers.

It has worked fine for a long while but recently it has started to abruptly stop working randomly (over 10 times per day).

I can get it to work again if I:

• Unplug the DAC from usb and immediately replug it in.
• Disable and them immediately enable the device in the windows "playback devices" window.

I have tried:

• Uninstalling and reinstalling Nvidia high definition sound drivers
• Disable USB selective suspend setting (this is a PC not a laptop).
• Troubleshoot sound problems

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It is plug and play and I have never installed drivers for it.

The question was in regards to USB DACs, not storage devices. USB DACs take the digital audio from the OS and through a DAC chip convert it to an analog signal as a pre-amp out or headphone out. This requires USB host / audio driver. It seems the answer
is no.
