Windows 10: Screen goes black after sleep,Win 10

I have an older refurb desktop with Windows 10. In the last 6 months or so, whenever I wake it up from sleep mode, the monitor comes on showing my desktop, but then goes black. The light on the monitor indicates that the monitor is turned on. If I turn it off and back on, the same thing happens-- the desktop comes up, then goes black. If I do this a third or fourth time, the monitor stays lit and works fine. This never happens spontaneously while I'm working.

Windows update tells me I have the latest drivers, but they're from 2015 and AMD is no longer supporting the adapter updates .


Any idea why this is happening? How I can fix it?

Is this a problem with the monitor itself or the graphics card and software?


Unless it gets worse, it's not earthshaking but it's annoying as hell.

BLACK SCREEN ON STARTUP AFTER WIN 10 UPDATE

If it was a "hardware issue" with the screen itself, logic suggests that it would be working fine with a remote monitor, wouldn't it? I have connected a known good monitor and it just "goes to sleep" immediately, too. Reconnect the same monitor to a working
computer and the monitor works fine. Put it back on the faulty laptop.... back to sleep. Doesn't that strongly suggest a software problem with the laptop in question?? This only occurred after a recent update to win 10. It had worked fine for a while and then........goes
to sleep and nothing but black screen since.
