Windows 10: Screen goes black once locked, have to restart by holding power button

I'm facing this problem for the past 3 days. Whenever I leave my laptop idle or close the flap with my pc still running, I cannot unlock my PC again because it turns black/ grey. I can see my brightness being adjusted when I try to adjust with my keyboard. But I cannot see anything on the screen. The first I was able to only view my cursor along with this black screen, so, I tried pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE on my keyboard which helped unlock my screen and continue to work. But for the past 2 days, I'm not even being able to view my cursor and my PC refuses to respond to CTRL+ALT+DELETE. I'm forc

As you have already tried to update the driver and changed the settings, I suggest you perform a startup repair by following the steps below and check if it helps.

• In the Lock screen, press/hold the shift key and click on power icon>restart.
• Click on Troubleshoot>Advanced Options>Startup Repair and follow the prompts to start the Startup Repair.

After the Startup Repair is complete, check for the status.

laptop black screen - and restarts even after holding down power off button

My Asus laptop, windows 10 does the following:

I started it up (think after a windows update which may not have finished well) and was welcomed by a completely black screen (no Asus logo, no bios access, nothing), but I hear from the power on button, HDD and fan noise that the machine is working

I tried to:

• shut the laptop off by holding down the power button up to 30
  seconds, but as soon as I release the button, the laptop starts up
  again to the black screen
  
• drain the laptop of power and go at it again. Same problem
  
• connect an external monitor - no signal
  
• boot from a bootable usb drive, but as the laptop never shuts down, I
  cannot even access the boot menu
  

It is not easy to open this laptop and I lack the instruments. It is outside of warranty. If one of you has a magical solution, this would be very much appreciated

Update

After having left the computer several days without power and starting it up again, it worked. As I couldn't remove the battery without tools, I think this was the only way to shut it down completely. Thanks for all the comments
