Screen save w/dual monitors: apps all move to LH monitor on resume

Running Win10 AU x64 with dual monitors connected to an nVidia Quadro K2200 video card running the latest 369.09 nVidia driver. My desktop extends across the two monitors and I'm using the standard Windows 10 blank screen save after 10 minutes of inactivity. Both monitors blank ok - the problem is that when I use the mouse or keyboard to bring the monitors out of screen save, all the applications that had their windows open on the RH monitor when screen save activated have been moved to the LH (primary) monitor, and I have to shift them back to the RH monitor.

This doesn't happen every single time, but it happens about two thirds of the time. Any suggestions on what to look for or how to remedy the problem?

The LH monitor is an Eizo EV3237 connected via displayport and the RH monitor a Dell U3011 connected via DVI.

    :)

  2. Windows 10 Dual Monitor "Screen off" Issues

    Hi Abdul,

thanks for trying to help, but your recommendation doesn't address the issue. The dual monitor set-up works, and none of the instructions refer to such an issue; i.e. that when resuming from power saving mode, all applications are displayed on the standard
Notebook screen (screen 1) as if windows interpreted that the external monitor had been turned off whilst windows was running (?) Or the Notebook tries to resume and the external monitor is not available so it concentrates all apps on the primary screen (i.e.
it thinks I have left my desktop environment with an additional screen and am now working without an additional screen so it tries to stop the old issue on Windows 7 (and before) of having to manoeuver the windows from "off the screen" back onto the screen
(ah, the good old days Screen save w/dual monitors: apps all move to LH monitor on resume :)). I have checked the external monitor settings and there is no additional monitor-hardware-specific timeout set. DDC/CI is turned on (if that would help at all) and I have set the USB hub to continue to power devices (shouldn't make
a difference, but nothing is documented these days, so who knows. . .)

My bet is on the resume - is there anyway to ensure that the external monitor is "awake" or windows waits for this to happen before continuing with the resume?

I'm still stumped, so any suggestions are welcome.

  3. Dual Monitor Functionality

At work we have Windows 7 Pro (I assume Enterprise), dual monitors, there I can have a browser open full screen on the left monitor (without having to reduce it first) and drag it to the right monitor and when I move it to the top of the screen, it becomes
    full screen automatically.

I have Windows 10 Pro at home, dual monitors, but I can't do this. If a browser is open full screen on the left monitor, I can't move it to the right until I reduce it from full screen and then move it to the right monitor, then it won't become full screen
until I use the icon at the top right of the browser again.

How can I fix my home computer to function like the one I have at work.

Let me thank you in advance...

Screen save w/dual monitors: apps all move to LH monitor on resume

Nick, this has been a topic of discussion on several threads here. What seems to work for some people does not work for others. I run 3 monitors and really do not have a problem with them moving. What I do is right click the desktop and select view, then uncheck 'Align Icons to Grid'. I then arrange the icons where I want them. Then I go back and check the 'Align icons to grid'. that works well for me, but not for others. It will change like yours occasionally, but that is always when I have a program lock up or have to do a hard shutdown, which is very rare for me.

I know I have see third party software mentioned to resolve this problem. I have never used third party software for that, so can't tell you anything about them.

Here are a couple of the other threads dealing with icon alignent if you would like to try some other options.

Thanks, but it's not the desktop icons that move - it's the windows of the applications that are running when screen save activates. I have applications running with their windows open on the RH monitor before screen save activates, but when the monitors come back on after screen save, all application windows are now positioned on the LH monitor. It's as though Windows forgets that the desktop is extended across both monitors and moves all active windows to the primary monitor.

could the problem be other monitor just initializing faster than the other, if so, the windows dont have time to react with the slower one and hence the windows goes to the faster one?

Screen save w/dual monitors: apps all move to LH monitor on resume

It doesn't seem so, as when coming out of screen save it's the secondary monitor (from which the app windows disappear) which is the first to show the desktop background. I thought it might possibly be that the primary monitor is a Displayport connection and the secondary DVI, but if I change the primary monitor to use a DVI connector then I can't get the full native 3840x2160 resolution, so that isn't an options, and the secondary monitor is older and only has DVI input. In any case, the problem is intermittent - as I stated in the original message, it happens about two times out of three.

Are you using two different monitors....brand and resolutions? If so, that's your issue right there as Windows is detecting the the higher resolution monitor first, that's set as primary (and by default when switching), thus everything is reverting back to higher rez monitor after screen save is enabled.

Most of us dual/triple monitor users, we all use the same/identical monitors in our setups. No chance for this type or other types of connection issues.

Prior to installing Windows 10 on this machine I had first Windows 7 and then 8.1 installed, and never had any such problem. In fact, I've been running dual monitor setups with dissimilar resolution monitors on a series of machines for at least the past 15 years, and had no problem until I installed Windows 10 a couple of months ago. This machine is also dual-boot with Linux Mint, and no problem there with open apps being moved to the primary monitor after screen save. Only after installing Windows 10 have I encountered this problem.

  11. I run three displays, two 19 inch 1280 x 1024 and one 22 inch wide screen 1080P as my main screen. Nothing moves when my screen saver activates. The only time any of my open windows move from screen to screen is if I switch it to PC Only when gaming.

  12. *Ditto I've been running dual and triple displays, different resolutions, with Windows 7, 8 and 10. My Apps/programs remember what screen they were last opened on and launch to that screen. I don't know why things have changed for you, all I can say is its working correctly for me in Windows 10. I don't normally use a screen saver, I just let the screens blank out. I turned it on though just to confirm nothing is moving on my multi monitor setup. Then turned it back off.

"had no problem until I installed Windows 10"..., therein lies the problem. Windows 10, as it turns out, is a camel-sized dog, with camel numbered fleas!
