How to prevent anniversity update trying use ATI video driver

Dell Precision M6600 ATI video card stopped working (blank screen on startup) in Windows 10

It was disabled in Windows 10 device manager.

In this case laptop is usable again: Windows 10 Base video driver with Intel HD graphcis 3000 is probably used.

However trying to upgrade to Windows 10 Anniversity Edition (build 1607) fails with blank screen and error 0xC1900101 – 0x30018

C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Rollback\setupapi\setupapi.dev.log shows that Upgrade installs ATI drivers from c:\AMD directory.

Maybe it tries to run ATI driver, ATI driver does not respond and this causes update to fail.

How to disable ATI video card so that Annniversity update does not find it ?

Thare are no options about this in Dell BIOS.

Maybe there is some setting for Anniversity Edition upgrade not to create c:\AMD directory and use base video driver instead of trying to install AMD video driver ?

Or can AMD video drivers installed in pre-anniversity windows when AMD card is not working and will this prevent upgrade to try to use it ?

  6. Try manually updating the driver and point it to the folder containing the old 13.1 or 13.4 legacy drivers you used in Windows 7. You may have an AMD folder on your C Drive containing them?

I changed screen refresh rate to 60, and its fixed. At least for now.

Screen refresh rate was 59 before, I just changed it. It worked.

But my doubt is what it mean? why screen refresh rate was 59 cropped my screen? is changing refresh rate to 60 OK??

    Experts please express your views

    Thanks.

  8. Screen shrunk after upgrading to windows 10 (ATI 4830 card)

I had similar issues each time I got a new build on the preview. Performing a clean install of the latest video driver corrected it every time.
The issue only occurred after a large build install, or after a video driver upgrade that didn't clear the settings first.

Set the refresh rate to what your monitor is optimal at. Higher is usually better.
