Windows 10: SD card as permanent storage, how to back it up?

Hi All,


I have a client with a Microsoft Surface device that was purchased with insufficient internal storage for her day to day use. We used the SD card slot to add a card and expand storage - a option recognised by Microsoft (https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/help/4023513).


However, how do we then get the system to recognise the SD card as local storage and include it in backups? Both the Microsoft backup options and third party backup solutions seem to not acknowledge the SD card as permanent storage and a source for files to backup.


Has anyone else encountered this one yet?

SD Card Storage not appearing windows

I recently partitioned my sd card (100gb exfat and 20gb ext4) so I could install apps on the sd card using link2sd. Everything worked out except that the sd card storage (100gb) doesn't show up in windows any more (just phone storage). This means I have to take out my sd card and put it in the computer to put things on it. Obviously, I would rather be able to just plug the phone straight to the pc with usb. How do I get sd card storage again to appear in windows?

Does your SD card work if you connect it to your computer?

If so, then what I would suggest is to backup it's content on your PC and format the SD card.

Once it's backed up, format the SD card through the phone.

Go to App List > Storage Sense > SD Card > Format SD Card to do that.

Thank you for posting on the Microsoft Support forums.

There is a possible way to move apps onto a new SD card. The process would be to move the apps back onto the phone's internal storage, remove the old SD card and insert the new SD card, then finally move the apps onto the new SD card. To move apps between
SD card phone memory, perform the following steps:

• Go to Settings.
• Select Storage Sense.
• Select either phone or SD card depending on where the soon-to-be-moved app(s) are currently located.
• Select apps+games.
• Select the app(s) that needs to be moved.
• Select move to SD or move to phone.

There isn't a supported method of moving apps directly between two SD cards so this is currently the best solution. If it isn't possible (maybe because the phone storage is already full) then coping over apps between SD cards won't be possible.
