Windows 10: SD Card shows Cannot find the file specified while assigning driver letters and paths.

My SD Card does not display on this pc, but it shows in disk management as a RAW file system type, it also works on my mobile, it is not hidden, tried checking for driver updates, I also tried to use another card reader.When I try to change the drive letter and path, it shows the system cannot find the file specified.Is there any way to fix this?

SD card visibility

Thanks for the response and I have tried both the methods you suggested.

There wasn't a 'Card Reader Driver' listed. But the SD card was listed in the Disc Drives section, but was showing no issues. It would populate correctly, but didn't show a drive letter.

It also showed in the Disc Management (Computer Management). If I try to assign a drive letter, I get 'The system cannot find the file specified'

What is curious is that it did briefly appear once but didn't persist after a reboot. I don't know what I did though!

I can insert my 16GB SD cards from my camera, and they work perfectly.

Also if I put the SD card in the phone, and switch on the Disc Drive, it stall does not assign a drive letter and again it appears in the Device Manager as a Disc. It obviously works perfectly in the phone too.

SD card failure

Hi Andrew,

I would need to ask few questions so I can isolate your concern properly. Kindly answer the following:

• Did you get a specific error message?
• What are the troubleshooting steps you have done so far?
• What's the current build of your computer? Press Windows key + R and then type winver.
• Did you try to run a full system scan using your anti-virus? Can you tell us the result?
• Does your SD card has a write protection?

Meanwhile, you may try these troubleshooting steps:

Step 1: Run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter. Open Settings> Update & Security> Troubleshoot> Hardware and Devices> Run the troubleshooter.

Step 2: Check SD Card in Disk Management.

1. Open Disk Management.
2. Your SD card will appear as a removable disk.
3. Check if it has a drive letter.
4. If it does not show anything, right click the SD card and then select “Change Drive Letter and Paths”.
5. Click “Add” and select a drive letter, then click “OK”.

Step 3: Update SD card driver.

1. Open Device manager.
2. Find your SD card and right click it.
3. Select Properties.
4. Click the driver tab and then select Update Driver.

Note: You may need to use a keyboard and mouse to connect to your laptop to perform the said steps if it does not allow on tablet mode.

 

Micro SD cards

Are you using a standard card reader or a micro disc adaptor?



1. Try to open the files by taking the ownership and permissions, by following the below steps:



a. Right click on the SD card, and select ‘Properties’.

b. Click on ‘Security tab’.

c. Click ‘Edit’ to change the permissions.

d. Click ‘Advanced’ for special permissions or advanced settings.



2. Try to open the files, and if the issue persists, share drive to get permissions by following the below steps:



a. Right click the SD card.

b. Select ‘Properties’.

c. Select ‘Share’ tab, and click ‘Advanced’.

d. Select ‘Share this folder’.

e. Click ‘Permissions’ button.

f. Add ‘Everyone’ and select ‘Full control’.

g. Click on ‘Apply’ button.



3. Change the drive letter of SanDisk micro SD card by following the below steps:



a. Press ‘Windows key + R’ together to open ‘Run command’.

b. Type ‘diskmgmt.msc’ without quotes, and press enter.

c. Right click on the SanDisk micro SD card, and select ‘Change drive letter and paths’.

d. Assign a new drive letter.



Note: Don’t assign a driver letter that is existing already.



4. Scan the SanDisk micro SD card to check viruses.
