Windows 10: Search bar not working after 10041 update

Can't type anything in the "search the web and windows" bar at the bottom. Also used to be able to click on start and type the name of the application to run it Windows would find it - this is not working either. Nothing happens when you type.

Anyone else having this issue?

No actually, this is happening on a different laptop which came with Win10 installed on it. That previous problem was with an older laptop, which was eventually updated to Win10 and given to a nother family member.

This current PC/laptop which has the problem has been getting Win10 updates since new, for a year without any similar problems.

As I mentioned it started happening with the KB4915217 update. And it goes away when that update is uninstalled, and comes back when Windows Update puts it back on. Pretty conclusive proof of the problem, I think...

I had run the windows troubleshooter prior to uninstalling KB4015217, it did not find anything even when run as admin. I believe this was the Update troubleshooter.

I did uninstall the update finally by going thru Control Panel->Programs->programs&features->installed updates. After the uninstall all the problems disappeared.

However it seems that Windows Update is going to try and install this update again as soon as I reboot, it is listing it as downloaded but needing a restart. I downloaded the showhide update troubleshooter, but since KB4015217 already was downloaded it can't
hide it.

Can you recommend a way to permanently block this update?

BTW- in addition to Settings and Search not working when this KB was installed, the menu behind the windows icon (lower left corner) no longer worked either. Additionally, if an app is re-pinned to the task bar, no icon shows up, but I can hilight the spot
and click on it to start the app when this update is loaded. If these offer any additional clues.

 

What happens if you press the *Start key? Nothing or something? Do you see the start menu at all?

 

Start menu pops up, but then if you type anything nothing is searched.
I can still click on All Apps etc and then browse for the app.

 

Reboot. I can't think of a better suggestion I'm afraid.

I have a very old laptop I also upgraded to 10041 and on that one pressing *Start and then searching misses the first few letters I am looking for - before the start menu wakes up and decides to pay attention.

If your start menu appears immediately when you press *Start then I don't know but rebooting sometimes helps all sorts of things *Smile
