Windows 10: Search no longer works in Windows 11

When are these f***ing a**holes at Microsoft going to quit releasing ****updates which do nothing but f*** up your system. I am so tired of wasting hours trying to figure out what they f***ed up in the latest release. My computer no longer shuts down properly. I get directions which I don't think have been updated since DOS and no longer can use my Windows search bar. If I could opt to never update Windows again, trust me I would take security threats over inept programers and any day.

File folder search function no longer works

I suggest you remove your cloud drive from the equation until it's clear indexing is working on your internal drive. Were you trying to use Windows search indexing to find things only in cloud storage? Items indexed should be as per your Indexing Options. I've certainly never tried using it to index something in cloud storage. Unless that appears as a drive letter you wont be able to specify it in Indexed locations.

But here Dropbox is reported as being indexed:

Does that mean searching indexed locations on your internal drive works?

Otherwise:
Please check search indexing is working as per post #4.
Then try open explorer at an indexed folder and try searching for a file on your disk.

 

Windows 11 search no longer finds php or yml files

I am using Windows 11 Pro 23H2

I've used php and yml files in Windows for years for quick retrieval of plain text snippets. For various reasons, I need .txt to open in MS Word, but I have php and yml set to open in Notepad++.

So, for several years, my workflow has been:

• Click the Windows icon
  
• Start typing the file name
  
• Hit Enter when the right file shows
  

This worked for files like sample.php or snippet1.yml

After a recent update, these files no longer show up in search or in Explorer search.

I can navigate to the folder the files are in, search *php or *.php or *.yml and get no hits. If I search on the exact file name, no hits.

Please note that I've already taken the following steps:

• Set 'Searching Windows' to Enhanced under 'Find my files'
  
• Noted indexing status: that 34,894 files are idexed, Pending: 0
  
• Verified file type settings for .php and .yml in the Advanced indexing options > Advanced > File types: yml and php are set to "Index Properties and File Contents"
  
• Did a complete index 'Delete and rebuild'
  
• Ran the search and indexing troubleshooters
  

The result is that files like .docx, .txt., even .htm are found normally but .php and .yml are invisible to search.

 

Windows 10 Start search no longer works

Many people are having this issue, and there's a lot of crazy suggestions out there. I've tried them all, and nothing worked until I did this:

• Delete the directory: C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy [REBOOT]
• Run the following command from Powershell with Admin privileges: Add-AppxPackage -Register "C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy\AppxManifest.xml" -DisableDevelopmentMode [REBOOT]

For Step 1, you'll have to boot to a WinPE drive, or maybe Safe Mode because the directory will be locked. But, if you do these two steps in this order it will fix the problem.
