Windows 10: Search opens Edge despite default browser not being Edge.

If I click the Start button on my keyboard and start typing, the start menu is eventually going to show me a "Best Match". If I click the "Best Match" when it's a website, Edge will start, loading Bing results for whatever I've entered as a search term.


Three things wrong with this picture, that I've ordered, descending, by annoyance levels:


- This can't be disabled completely. I don't want so send my entered keyboard terms over the wire to a 3rd party search.


- Opens in Edge, despite a different browser being listed as by Default Web Browser.


- Loads Bing search results. No way to customize which search engine is used.


Ideally I'd like to disable this completely, but there doesn't seem to be an settings page for "Cortana and Search" any more. before, it would let you turn that off and only search local files. Barring that, having the resulting website open in my browser of choice should be possible.... and, even if windows stubbornly decides to open Edge it not being my default browser, I should surely be able to set where the search engine goes.... no dice.


I've seen a lot of topics tied to this, each with links to registry hacks to get it to work right from Independent Advisors. I'm sure with enough effort and hacking the registry I can get it to work how I want as it were - not at all -- For the love of pete, could we just make the UI intuitive and give the user some options to control how their operating system functions? It's not asking the world here.

Step One: Open Microsoft Edge

Step Two: type in the search engine into the browser address such as (www.google.com)

Step Three: Click on the three dots top right below the x (close button)

Step Four: Click on settings

Step Five: Scroll and click on Advance Settings

Step Six: Scroll to Search in the address bar with click within the box

Step Seven: Click on Add NEw
