Windows 10: searchindexer.exe not working

I want to share this with other who may have the same problem.

I noticed the problem when I tried to search my email in Outlook. It just kept turning and turning but nothing came up. I went into File>Option>Search and went into the index option. The window popped up but it said that search is not working. I tried to click on the Advance tab trying to re-index it, but it won't open the advance tab.

I went into index option from Windows, it said index is completed and 500000+ files were...

It is possible that you .exe is not working due to corrupted system files or account. To assist you better, kindly answer the following questions:

• Does this happen with a specific application or with all of your application?
• Have you tried creating a new admin account to check if the issue also with new account or only with the current account?

In the meantime, we suggest that you follow the steps in this article on how

The tutorials provided are just a list of troubleshooting steps. Use only the steps which apply to you.

Since none of the troubleshooting steps here worked, I'd suggest you do a Clean install.

Thanks - the exe and instructions worked great


While it is indeed possible under Windows 10 to use an older winhlp32.exe to read .hlp files, there are security vulnerabilities in doing so.

Converting to PDF is one option, but reading a PDF is not quite the same as having a fully functional Help file. Conversion to a help file format that Windows 10 supports would be the ideal.

The replacement format for help files is the compiled HTMLHelp format (CHM). The look and use of a .chm help file is almost identical to that of the older .hlp files. In fact, the project files (table of contents, images, text etc.) used to compile a .hlp file can easily be converted to a .chm project. From there it's an easy step to recompile the project in .chm format. Microsoft of course don't release the project files for their Help files, but these can be recreated by decompiling the .hlp file.
