Windows 10: Second display stopped working

I have a Surface Pro 7 connected to a Kensington SD 7000 dock and a second display. The second display has worked normally since purchasing the Pro 7 and for some time after I upgraded to Windows 11. The second display has just gone black. The Pro 7 seems to detect the second display, but the display stays black. I put my wife's Surface Pro 7 which is still running Windows 10 in the dock, and it works fine, so it doesn't seem to be a display, cable or dock problem. I even tried my old Microsoft dock with the same result, the second display works properly with my wife's Surface Pro 7 running W

Second Display Working But Not Available

Weird problem, it's probably a driver issue but I'm relatively new to Win 10 (meh) so I'm asking before doing. I have 2 displays, my main display, identified as display 2 is a displayport connection, while my secondary display identified as display 1 is on a HDMI to VGA adapter. All of this was configured and working the other day. It appears, but I'm not 100 percent sure, that when I updated my Nvidia graphics driver that my secondary display stopped working. I enable/disable the second display regularly so I can't be 100 percent sure when the issue started. I also just uninstalled and then reinstalled Nvidia GeForce Experience not wanting to start after the Win10 update from Win7, though it's likely this didn't have anything to do with the problem.

Anyways, when I start my computer, the Post, UEFI/BIOS and pre login Windows starting screen all appear on my secondary display so I know it's not a hardware issue. When the Windows login screen appears display is switched to my main display and the secondary goes to sleep. When I go into my Nvidia control panel to enable the secondary display, under set up multiple monitors, I see both my displays listed. My main display is listed with a checked checkbox next to it. My secondary display is listed with an unchecked checkbox next to it. Though not greyed out, the checkbox for the secondary display cannot be checked. When I do a display detect in Nvidia control panel it still shows both displays listed.

Now, if I go to my Win10 device manager, under monitors, only my main display is listed. If I do a detect displays in Win10 device manager it says no new displayed detected. This was all working fine the other day, don't know if it's a Windows update that broke it, the latest Nvidia driver or some setting I changed. I had been playing with the refresh rate on the main monitor as well as the display specific setting/enable settings for the selected display model under Set up G-SYNC. I've tried switching these setting back and forth but it has no effect on the detection of the secondary display. Thanks in advance.

 

second display configuration issue

My configuration:

Windows 10 Pro x64
AMD Radeon HD 7800

Latest updates and video drivers installed, no hardware changes for 2+ months, latest significant Windows update 2 weeks ago, latest AMD video driver installed at least a week ago.


I have 2 identical displays connected via DVI to Windows PC over several years already with "Extend displays" configuration, and suddenly this configuration stopped working a couple of days ago when I was in the middle of doing something. Windows just replaced it with "Duplicate displays" configuration.


During PC startup I see BIOS diagnostics on both displays. Windows detects 2 displays. "Show only on 1" and "Show only on 2" options work as expected.


Problem: "Extend these displays" results in display 1 going blank and display 2 shows it's part of the image.


AMD Eyefinity (which creates virtual desktop over several monitors) works fine - which suggests that problem maybe only with Windows configuration.


What is done:

• checked cables
• removed and installed again latest AMD drivers
• removed second display from the System Devices, refreshed hardware list and added display again - now I have "Generic PnP monitor" and monitor with correct name in Monitors section
• searched for latest drivers for monitors and display adapters from Device Manager, nothing found

Next I replaced one monitor with monitor from different manufacturer, and everything works as expected - "Extend these displays" configuration shows extended image.


Any ideas what else can be done to fix the problem?

Laptop display does not detect itself

In regards to your concern, since the second screen can't detect the display settings of your other laptop, we suggest that you perform the steps below and see if it helps:

• Go to Settings.
• Click on System.
• Under System, choose Display.
• Under Multiple displays, click on Duplicate these displays and apply.
