  1. Second hard drive not found after upgrade to Windows 10

I originally replied to a thread about this issue THREE YEARS AGO.

    (SEE https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...o/16582692-bff3-47a6-9371-7790aec7b2f3?page=2).

    That thread is now locked.

As I said in my original post, after upfrading to Windows 10 from Windows 7, my second internal hard drive was nowhere to be found. It did show up in the Disk Managment window - but instead of being a 4 tb GUI NTFS disk, it was entirely unallocated with no drive letter.

I rolled back o Windows 7, and the drive magically reappeared.

i later replaced my C:\ drive with an SSD and also had to replace my 2nd data drive when it started to fail.

Finally, last week, a full three years later, figuring Microsoft would have long since fixed what has to be a common problem (since many people have switched to smaller boot SSDs and separate data drives), I tried the upgrade again.

the exact same thing happened this time, too.

However, I was bound and determined to fix it this time. I tried every suggestion I could find. I tried the ones in the thread that is now locked, including two different partitioning programs (which maynhave been free when they were suggested, but aren’t free now. Heck, I even paid for one. I tried things that made sense - using AOEMI partition recovery - and things that didn’t (running the Windows Memory Diagnostics). Nothing worked.

Finally, I threw money at the problem. I found TestDisk, a free, open source program for finding and fixing disk problems. It was apparent that Windows 10 (which logged the fact that it “migrated” the disk had screwed up the boot records and partition on the disk. Using TestDisk, I was able to partially recover the partition to the point that could see and read the files that were on the disk. So I bought a new 4 tb hard drive, installed it in my computer in place of the one Windows 10 messed up, formatted it to be my second hard drive with Windows 10, installed the corrupt, partially repaired drive in a USB case, and used TestDisk to copy all of the files from the corrupt drive to the new hard drive.

That seems to have worked. Windows 10 has a second drive, and I’m reasonably sure all of the files are on it. After Carbonite catches up, I will reformat the drive in the USB case and copy all of the files back to it, giving me another copy of my data drive.

It is incredible to me that this problem hasn’t been fixed by Microsoft.

    :)

  2. Windows 10 installation does not recognize second hard drive

    Hello Brian,

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Community. We regret the inconvenience caused and will assist you in resolving the issue.

From the above description, I understand you are unable to detect the second hard drive on your computer after upgrading to Windows 10.

If your computer was able to recognize the second hard disk before Windows 10 upgrade, there are chances of your current hard disk drives being incompatible with the upgraded operating system.

Update the disk drivers manually from Device manager by following the steps below and check if the issue is resolved.

    • Press Windows logo + X keys on the keyboard and select
Device manager from the context menu.
    • Expand Disk drives, right click on the second hard disk and select
Update driver software from the context menu.
    • Follow the on-screen instructions and wait for the update to complete.
    • After the update is complete, close the window and check if the changes are effective.

Write to us with the status of the issue on the same post for further assistance. Your reply is most important for us to ensure we assist you accordingly.

    Thank you.
