    Security update severe issues

Hi all so I'll try and be brief as this problem is quite messy.

So about a month ago Windows did one of it's usual updates which I had no say in, then the following day after it had applied the update I found myself no longer able to enter my password to log in. The problem being that despite being connected to my router Via an Ethernet cable, the system was not detecting any internet connection. I tried every fix online for this and tried it wi-fi, no luck. So this had me locked out of my computer, I was on the live help with windows support on my phone for hours all night and they were as helpful as they could possibly be, this however wasn't enough to even progress my issue in the slightest. Eventually I managed to go to a friends and put PCUnlocker onto a disc and boot from it and do all sorts of shenanigans to get into my system, which was great if not for the fact it still didn't afford me access to the internet no matter what fix I tried.

So a version rollback was in order and was administered, sadly last night I was once again forced to do a security update and today when I came home from Uni I was met with the same issue, this time somehow even more difficult to rectify. After finally gaining access to my system once more and doing another version rollback Windows immediately tried to force me to update again, luckily it crashed and I remain safe for who knows how long.

There are a host of other problems I am experiencing with this operating system, it won't even let me take a password off my system despite using the step by step guides windows have posted online. I'm at my wits end with these issues and almost missed a very important deadline today due to it. Any help would be appreciated.

    :)

Hi Jordan333 and welcome to Tenforums.

Sorry to hear you're having such problems.
Please add all the info you can to your computer specs so we can help you better.
Go into your internet connection first and change it to Metered - that should stop updates for a bit while we work, ok?

Do you use a program to image your machine, like Macrium Reflect? If so, please make an image now of the system as it is.

If not, do you have an external drive which we could put a system image on? Macrium Reflect has a free version we can use. Actually, you should be doing this on a regular basis anyway.

Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect Backup Restore Tutorials

Once Macrium is installed, the image made and the rescue media created, you should add the Macrium boot feature to the system.

    From the tutorial:

    Some additional questions for you:

    • Do you use anti-virus/anti-malware programs, and if so, which ones?
    • Do you login to your computer with a local account or a Microsoft Account (MSA)?
    • Do you have any "bangs" on anything in Device Manager?
    • Have you checked your OEM or Motherboard manufacturer for BIOS/Chipset/Network updates?
    • What do you mean by "it won't even let me take a password off my system"?
    • What version are you on now? In the search box, type winver; select to run the command, and post the results.

Thanks for the quick and in depth reply simrick. As I understand it I can not make a metered connection on an ethernet set up unless I make a registry change which I'm not too confident risking with my limited knowledge. I have windows home so I also sadly can't make the suggested changes offered in your second reply. I do have macrium and your idea to image and add macrium boot is very helpful and I will certainly get around to doing that.

    1. yes I use both avast and malwarebytes.
    2. I'm honestly not entirely sure if it is a local or microsoft account sorry.
    3. again not entirely sure what is meant by "bangs" sorry.
    4. I have not checked for any updates in these fields and will make sure to do so soon, thanks for the advice.
    5. Well when I followed the guides I found on how to remove the password for windows 10 all it did was add a second account with another password requirement.

Bangs are questions marks (or other things like exclamation marks) on the devices - it means there is something that needs to be addressed.
Your Windows version is quite old - it has to be updated, and so we'll have a bit of work to get it to a point where it will accept the upgrade successfully.

    More questions:
    • Is/are Avast and/or MBAM paid or free versions?
    • Is this system a clean install of W10, or an upgrade from W7/W8?

Okay, please do this before we continue:
    1. Identify the update (the KB number) which you want to avoid and use the tutorial to Show/Hide Updates I linked above.
    2. Create a full, verified image of the entire hard drive now, add Macrium to your boot menu, and disconnect the external drive.
    3. Create a new user on the system, make it a Local Account, do not use a password, (leave the password fields blank), and then set it as an Administrator level.

Sorry for the delay in replying, it forced the update again and once more I had to go through all the loopholes to get back. It is now once again forcing the update and then it will force me to restart.

Edit- I have created a new local account with admin privileges., the malwarebytes account and avast account are free versions and I don't actually have an external hdd to do as you suggested with macrium.

No problem. See if you can do the Show/Hide Updates now, to stop the update from installing. It may be, that it won't work until the update is installed (I can't remember exactly; it's been a while since I used it).

Great. Now I want you to completely turn off all the Avast web shields - before any rebooting is done.

How do you make your backups then? You really need an external drive that you can physically disconnect from the system. How large is your OS drive, and how full is it?

I just have system restore points that I roll back to, don't actually have anything backed up which I agree is a bit risky and I think after this I'll definitely be buying an external for backup. Os drive is 1Tb and is currently about 600gb full.

I'll make sure to disable the avast shields before the reboot, I will allow it to happen to see how this all plays out with the new local account and such. Failing that then I'll use your previously linked method to hide the updates.

This will probably not happen until tomorrow considering how long it takes to update and apply the update. Thanks for bearing with me so far, hopefully we can fix this all come tomorrow.

Yes, I would recommend getting a 2TB or larger external drive (preferably Seagate) to use for Macrium images. I would also get it sooner rather than later. *Wink
The new local account shouldn't make any difference as to whether the update installs or not - it's just a safety net I wanted for future work on the system. Disabling the Avast shields *may* help, but I can't guarantee that's the only problem that exists.

I would really like you to try the Show/Hide Updates tool, to see if it will allow you to hide the update BEFORE you reboot, if you can. Tomorrow is ok - I know it's late for you.

I'm just concerned that the restore point(s) may eventually get corrupted, and you'll be stuck.

    No problem at all. *Smile

    Decided to give it a try seeing as I can't turn my computer off until the download for the update finishes anyway. I downloaded the service pack and ran the programme, I then selected hide updates and it is showing me;

    - 3 intel system updates dated 10/03/2016,
    - 1 intel USB update dated 10/03/2016
    - 1 intel driver update for intel(R) Management Engine Interface
    - 1 intel other hardware intel(R) watchdog timer driver (Intel(R) WTD)

Should I select all of them and then click next?

So it's not showing you the KB for the upgrade....then it's not gonna work until you reboot. *Sad
No, don't select any of them; it's not going to help, I don't think.

I can get you a code to force a shutdown without installing - hold on.......
