Yes, I"m sure it's difficult using a phone. No problem, we'll muddle through all right.

    No bangs - good.
I'll mention something here, up front, about upgraded W7 systems, just so you are aware.
I have noticed that, of all the upgraded W7 or W8 systems I have worked on with problems, the majority of them were W7 upgrades. For some reason there is a lot of baggage that hangs around on W7>W10 upgrades; some were able to be fixed, and some not. In any case, there was never a problem found that couldn't be resolved with a clean install of W10. But, I realize you are trying to avoid this, so we'll move in that direction.

That does not surprise me. *Wink
Okay I'm going to post some screen schots of what I need from you on the NIC in Device Manager. You can snap a pic with your phone and post in the thread. I have to identify the adapter in order to find you the correct driver.

Excellent. How easy it is for you to get hold of it? In other words, should we come up with a list of downloads that you can get all at once, so as not to bother the owner of that system too much?

I will have a look at your MB shortly. In the meantime, you'll want to run System information once again, for some information I will need.

So, are you going to turn System Restore on and create some new restore points for your new version? Or, are you going to hold off on that? You can hold off - I just need to know your decision.

I also will suggest running the SFC /SCANNOW at an Admin Command Prompt, to see what results we get.

    Thanks.

    In Device Manager

    Expand Network Adapters
    Highlight your NIC (Realtek)
    Right-click and select Properties
Go to the Driver tab up top and give me the driver info (provider + date + version + digital signer)

Now go to the Details tab
It should be the Property of Device description
    Tell me what that says.

In the Properties dropdown field, click on the down arrow now and select Hardware IDs
Give me the longest description line there (PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_15B8&SUB......ect.)

This information will help me identify a driver for your NIC.

    In System Information:
Tell me the current BIOS information of your MB.

Will get that Info and picture to you within the hour bud, just out at shops atm.

Going to hold off at the meantime on making the restore points. I have fairly easy access to the other computer so I don't think he'll be too bothered by me going back and forth to him.

Thanks again for all the help, will get that Info as soon as I'm home.

FYI: Looking at the GB support site:
    GA-Z68X-UD4-B3 (rev. 1.0) | Motherboard - GIGABYTE Global

Selecting W10 64-bit architecture, I see Realtek, Chipset and BIOS drivers/updates.

You can find your currently installed Chipset driver version by looking in Device Manager.

Note, where W10 drivers are not available, W8 should be fine for this.

BIOS will be a bit tricky. W7 never used UEFI - that was introduced in W8. So, your system is legacy-booting. I would not use the UEFI one. Do you have F10 installed, or something earlier?

I would like to try a Realtek driver first, to see if we can get you back online, so I will wait for your response on what you have in Device Manager for it.

I suppose it is, strange but I guess I never bothered to update as long as it was working fine.

Yes, okay. It's common to not update a BIOS if you're not having any problems. Updating a BIOS can be risky business (if it ain't broke, don't fix it). But in your case, it will be necessary.

Meanwhile, I'd like you to try something on the Realtek NIC:

In Device Manager, highlight the Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller.
    Right-click and select Update Driver
Select Browse my computer for driver software
Select Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer
Make sure the box is checked to Show compatible hardware

What does it show, other than Microsoft Driver version 9.1.406.2015 dated 4/6/2015?

On the page which says 'select device driver you want to install for this hardware' it lists 2 options

Realtek PCIe GBE family controller (microsoft)
And the second option is the exact same however it says in brackets (Realtek)

Okay, we can try two things to see if we can get you back online:

    1. Select the Realtek driver and let it install. You'll have to reboot the system for it to take affect.

If that doesn't get you back online,

    2. Back in Device Manager, select your Realtek NIC and right click, select uninstall device. After it's been uninstalled (only the device, not the driver), highlight your computer name at the top, right-click and select Scan for hardware changes. Windows should find the NIC and install the preferred driver for it.
