Windows 10: Self build PC freezes on Windows 10 startup

I recently did a case swap with a PC I built from around 5 years ago and added 3 extra 120mm case fans. After the swap Windows 10 would freeze on starting up, the spinning circle of dots would just stop spinning and nothing would happen after.


I took the PC to a specialist PC fix shop and they got it to start most of the time, however when Windows updates requiring a restart the same problem occurs and the computer freezes on the spinning dots.


If I do a reset then it loads normally, however this is not very convenient to do obviously.

Also a freeze occurs when updating the AMD graphics card software usually when the installer reports 'Detecting hardware', this freeze also requires me to reset the computer to fix.


Is there anything I can do to fix the problems myself without taking the PC back to the PC repair shop?

I'm not sure how to do that. Could you list the steps for a noob?

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK
