Windows 10: Serial Ports getting mixed up after fresh install of 20H2

I have a system with 4 serial ports BIOS names \_SB.PCI0.LPCB.UAR1 to .UAR4. When doing a clean install of Windows 10 20H2, the COM ports get mixed up in numbering e.g. COM2 to labeling e.g. BIOS name of \_SB.PCI0.LPCB.UAR2. The external box labeling matches the BIOS names.COM1 gets \_SB.PCI0.LPCB.UAR2, COM2 gets \_SB.PCI0.LPCB.UAR3, COM3 gets \_SB.PCI0.LPCB.UAR1 and COM4 is correct as \_SB.PCI0.LPCB.UAR4.

The COM ports are consistently messed up in the exact same orientation for every fresh install of Windows 20H2. But this issue is not present with clean installs of 1909 or 2004. It is not present if you upgrade, say from 2004 to 20H2, via Windows Update.


Is there a change, maybe to the BIOS, that I need to make?


Note: we can manually correct the issue in Device Manager via Ports >> Properietes >> Port Settings >> Advanced and reimaging from a corrected system appears to be fine for subsequent clones. This kind of caught us as a bit strange so I though I would see if anyone else has seen the same problem or has a fix.

We have

Hyper-V Manager version: 10.0.18362.1

installed on Windows 10. We need to use serial port on victual machine, but could not get correct configuration. We tried some suggestions from internet, such as remote logon the virtual machine and use the serial port on host computer. It does not work neither.
What is the best way to get serial port on Hyper-V virtual machine?

Hopefully I can help you here....its a very common thing to happen.


First, I take it you dont know the passwords for console access or telnet/ssh?

I will assume that these devices belong to you.

step 1. Plug a cisco console cable into a serial port on your pc
step 2. Plug other end into Cisco console port
step 3. Using hyperterm or putty or similar connect to the serial port
step 4. boot router, and make sure you clearly can see the output (this confirms you have good serial comms)
step 5. if this fails, adjust the comm port settings (9600, 8,1,n are the default)
step 6. now you have to do the only hard part...send the break command:

Break command list: Break Commands

Go down the list and match your OS and SW and try the sequence suggested.

If this fails several times do what I do: Install putty (free) and then to send a break so you can get into rommom just hit "ctrl-a b".

 

Changing the Port settings for Serial-USB.

If you want to change the port settings, please follow the steps mentioned below:

1. Open Device manager (right click on start button
   and then on Device manager).
   
2. Then expand port (COMS & LPT).
   
3. Then right click on Prolific USB-to Serial Comm Port and then on properties.
   
4. Go to port settings and click on Advanced.
   
5. You will be able to make the changes on this screen.
