1. Serious Issue: How to know if a website is safe?

I'm sorry to be creating a thread as I know this community is really busy, but I tried searching and I didn't know what else to do.

I just want to know how I can check if this website is safe to download from.

I want to download this app, but I don't know how I can verify if it's safe or not. Link: GIMPS - Free Prime95 software downloads - PrimeNet

Thank you for any help!

:)

How to know if the incoming call is a diverted call

Hi,

I've Nokia 5230 mobile.

How can I know if the incoming call is a diverted call from another number?

Say I have two numbers A and B and I activated all calls divert from B to A.

If some one calls to B, it gets diverted to A. Then I've to find out in mobile A that this call is a diverted call.

In many other Nokia phones, it will show a small arrow next to phone symbol when the phone is ringing if the incoming call is diverted from another number.

Nokia 5230 also shows this small arrow but only for very short duration (1 sec). Generally no one will be looking at phone waiting for a call. when a call comes, we hear the ring tone and look at the mobile,, by this time the diverted arrow symbol is gone.

Is there any other way to find out if the incoming call is a diverted call? is there any application available for this kind of purposes?

Thanks,

Kamal

How to know if the incoming call is a diverted call

If phone C is calling phone B, call gets diverted to phone A and you will see number "C" in phone A.

4. Serious Issue: How to know if a website is safe?

Hello and welcome:

This is the link in your post:
Code: GIMPS - Free Prime95 software downloads - PrimeNet According to Virustotal, the site is clean:
https://www.virustotal.com/en/url/0e...is/1473825018/

HOWEVER: This is NOT a 100% guarantee of safety for the site or its content.

Moreover, I think the "official" download site for GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program), if that is the software you're looking for, is here:
Code: https://www.gimp.org/
I would be wary of downloading it from a 3rd-party source.

HTH,
MM

5. Thanks so much for your reply!

I just checked and "GIMP" and "GIMPS" are two different things. "GIMPS" stands for 'Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search'.

6. Hi:

Thanks for the clarification.
I've never heard of "GIMPS".
The VT scan of the site is clean, but I would be wary.
A 3rd-party site offering "free" software may end up delivering any manner of unwanted "free" gifts...*Sad
In general, the safest place to download software is the software publisher's own site, not a 3rd-party hosting site.

Cheers,
MM

7. Thanks!

It seems that "GIMPS" is the company that makes Prime95? *Huh

Could be.
I presume you're talking about the CPU stress tester?

The site and the software could be perfectly safe. I have no personal familiarity with either. But, as previously mentioned, the VT analysis of the site you provided was clean.

We'll need to wait for someone more facile with Prime95 and CPU overclocking to weigh in.*Wink

Cheers,
MM

hmmm....forum always shortens these things so you can't read every character....this will work:

Code: http://www.mersenne.org/ftp_root/gimps/p95v289.win64.zip
Yes. Always scan anything you download before opening/running it. There's always the remote chance it could pick up something when hopping. Unfortunately, I don't see any hashes to compare, although that may be in the zip now, and once extracted you'll have that to double-check file integrity. They did not have hashes in the zip when I downloaded it last year - maybe they've change that, I don't know.

Cheers MM! Happy to help. Thanks for the rep and g'night. *Wink

Thanks!

Other than "virustotal.com" is there another way I can check that the file is safe before I download it???

Of course I've got my Windows 10 Pro PC fully updated, but if I download it to my local PC HDD there's still a risk of my PC being infected without me even opening the file right?

14. The VT link I provided was only for the site, the URL, not for the software.
You would need to upload the actual file to VT to analyze the setup file after you have extracted it (IOW do not submit the archive/zip file).

@simrick provided advice about how to verify the installer, once it's downloaded and extracted.
And you can submit it to virustotal, and you can scan it with your AV.
She'll likely have additional advice for you.
(A dose of situational awareness and hesitation when downloading any file from the internet is not a bad thing these days.)

I mean no disrespect, but, why do you need Prime95?
Are you planning on overclocking?
It can be a good way to wreck a system, if not undertaken with great care and expertise.
<just asking>

Cheers,
MM

15. Thanks!

What do you mean by this?:
What's the best set of steps I should follow before installing the software to my Windows 10 PC?

What does "IOW" stand for?
