  1. seriously slugging after clean install

    Hey,

I have a fairly decent laptop and have performed a clean install of windows 10 however its now sooooooo slow in untrue. If I click on something then there is about 5 seconds before anything happens on the screen.

Opening websites is also slow and rendering any graphics when the sites are loading is like dial up.

    Whats going on ?

this machine is fairly decent (4th gen intel i5, 8GB Ram and 1.5TB Hard drive)

All drivers have been updated and the hard drive has been defragged.

Any suggestions as to how I can see where the bottle neck is and basically fix it please?

    Thanks

    Scott

    :)

It's a bit like killing a mosquito with a shotgun slug but hey - you're the "engineers".

    Hey Cortana ... re-install Windows 10

Hi, sorry your PC is sluggish. Basics:
Can you post a screenshot of your task manager organised by highest CPU use + anything else that's significant when nominally idle?

Can you confirm in particular your graphic driver is appropriate and correct? (Noted your general comment about drivers).
What is the model no. of your laptop - is it in Samsung's Win 10 compatible list?

Check you have the genuine chipset drivers for your motherboard, and not generic Microsoft drivers installed. Go to the Tenforums Drivers and Hardware forum and the sticky threads at the top for links.

I'm trying to recall sthg I saw about systems with 1Gb VRAM at one point.

I have a Dell i5 laptop and many months ago I tried, tried and tried to get W10 to install and run. Clean installs, upgrade installs. Nothing worked and and Scotts description sounds exactly like the issues I had. So slow it was unusable.

What did work was taking the HDD down to 100% unallocated space before clean installing. I don't know if Scott has done that but it might be worth a try. All easily done from the initial 'advanced' install screens. where you can select and delete each partition on the drive. Doing that returns it to unallocated space. then do your clean install.

Yes, insufficient spare disk space could be the problem. (Windows.old will take up space).

@scottvsaunders How much spare space do you have on C:?
Perhaps you could post a screenshot of
    diskmgmt.msc
run from a Run box (Windows key + R)

Besides CPU or Disc usage and space, is this every time you boot up? (I'm asking if you let it sit a bit after booting does it start acting normal again)

Might be indexing, also, turn off the option for it to get updates thru "other systems on the network"

Indexing, if working correctly, backs off when CPU use rises, so shouldn't be expected to be a problem. However people have reported issues with Defender + indexing, and CPU issues vary, one more common one being System and Compressed Memory.

    We'll see.

  10. It's every time I boot, I initially though it might be a hard drive fault & have downloaded some health tools, these show the hard drive is "good" and functioning as it show.

Even defragmentation of the drive shows the smaller amount of file fragmentation.

All drivers have been updated now so it's just really odd.

The laptop was purchased second hand and the seller did a clean install for me which I then redid upon getting the machine home.

The free space issue seems probable , I am going to have to create the recovery media then go for the advanced install option to clear down the drive .

**pleae ignore any spelling or grammar errors as I type this from my phone***

So you've loads of disk space; your task man screenshot should help which will show how much spare RAM you have as well as CPU & disk usage.

Here you go - looking at the disk it seems to keep jumping up, it will go from 0 - 17 - 59 - 98 constantly when I am not doing anything other than watching the monitor process.
