Windows 10: Set Network Location to Private - Which is most suited method?

I wish to set my Ethernet and WiFi networks to Private, but am having problems doing so.

I'm looking at this Tutorial, Set Network Location to Private or Public in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials , but can't determine which is the best method to use to ensure success.





.... these show my current WiFi and Ethernet Networks status.

Appreciate clear advice or direction.

I tried what you suggested but when doing this, i noticed that whenever i am connected to my VPN, the Windows network shows up as "unidentified network" instead of network 1,2,3 or whatever. So when i went into regedit and looked for networks, i found some but none called unidentified.
There was one network with the value 0 so i changed it to 1 (private) but after checking, my VPN connection still shows as public.

I am not really sure why it says unidentified network in Windows when i am connected to the VPN but it seems that this is the cause for the problem. If i could only find the VPN network in the list of networks in regedit, i think i would be able to change the value to 1.

Hmm..not sure how to proceed with this. Any ideas?

Hi Brink great job I have one more way of changing the network location so if you ever get the time to add an option 4 here it is, Feel free to delete this post if you do.

Option 4 To Change Network Location in Settings in Powershell

open Powershell as an administrator





Enter this command
Code: Get-NetConnectionProfile[/quote]



Find the interface you would like to change, In my case it is Ethernet-2.
Note: Originally my interface was called " Ethernet 2 " Powershell would not accept the following commands with a space so I renamed the interface to " Ethernet-2 " .

To change the interface type or copy paste the following command

Code: Set-NetConnectionProfile -InterfaceAlias Ethernet-2 -NetworkCategory Private[/quote] Or to set it to Public

Code: Set-NetConnectionProfile -InterfaceAlias Ethernet-2 -NetworkCategory Public[/quote]



Note you can also change the interface by using other names

I don't know if you make those scree shots on Windows 10 Pro machine since I have a Windows 10 Home 64-bit on my PC. However, I didn't see any 'properties' in Changing Network Location of Wi-Fi Network.( as you said "B) Click/tap on the wireless network name (ex: Brink-Router2) you are currently connected to, click/tap on Properties, and go to step 7 below. (see screenshot below)





To change the Network location of WiFi Network, I had to select 'advance option', and then Turn on/off Make this PC discoverable
