Windows 10: Setting Defaults by App or File

I recently bought a new 1Tb SSD drive to use as my system drive, I have been trying to associate opening of xml files in either Notepad++ or Sublime Text 3 I have seen many "Solutions" through Google however none seem to work for me. The "Set defaults by app" doesn't show either program as an option, the "Choose default apps by file type" will not allow me to change the .xml default to either program. the original association in apps by file type was set to Microsoft Office Xml Handler, so I uninstalled Microsoft Office since it was a Trial and I didn't need or want it. so when it got done uninstalling I found out that windows 10 decided it was time to associate xml files with internet explorer, and again will not let me change it. I was looking around and since I have Visual Studio 2017 installed I wondered what would happen if I tried to associate the xml files with it. and Viola it worked I was able to physically change the association to another Microsoft program, really!!! << Scarcasm at its worst...


So anyway after that I tried again to associate the xml files to Sublime and Notepad++ and guess what!! No Go. I shouldn't be forced to use a Microsoft program to open up files of my choosing. Surely there has to be a way around this? Has anyone else had this specific problem?

How to set Microsoft Photos App as default

Win10: set 'view' default in file explorer

1. In the search box type as “settings”.

2. Go to “system” and click on “default apps”.

3.Then click on “set default apps by”.

4. Select “File Explorer from the list” and click on “choose defaults for this program”.

5. Then check the box “select all” and click on “save.

6. Then click on “ok”.

Setting defaults by app


I need help to understand how do set ALL supported file formats to associated app.
In Settings > Default Apps > Defaults by app > APP > Manage I get overlong list of file formats, most of them unassociated.
I don't find any method how to select them all and assign them to this App. In Windows 8.x it worked this way I have detailed list with sorting and multiselect capabilities. That list in Windows 10 is dummy and unable to assign other way than selecting App from drobdown for each format. Is that smarter list from Windows 8 really gone?
