Windows 10: Setting File Explorer columns - and KEEPING them

Having set Win 10 columns (types and positions) I’ve several times used the option to apply this to ALL. But this never seems to survive, even within a session (i.e. before a reboot). Is there a registry hack or a freeware tool that can achieve this reliably please? And can this work for all file browser dialogues as well as File Explorer folders?

File Explorer Column Headings Keep Resetting

File Explorer has gone crazy after last nights upgrade.

My only has icons instead of full descriptions. I can not get back to a point where I have tabs that actually say something. Please tell me how to get my view repaired? help... Help.... HELP!!!

 

After a tip elsewhere I found a string "BagMRU Size" at:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local>Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\AllFolders\S hell

It had no value assigned. I optimistically modified it to 10000 and that seems to have worked.



My setting is now appearing on all half dozen or so 'similar' folders.

Anyone have any ideas as to how that (rather important?) registry setting can have been created with no value assigned?

if you have automatic folder type discovery enabled windows can determine it's own folder view settings based on folder content (as far as I know)

I keep it disabled and apply general template to all folders and subfolders but that's my personal preference. See note under Option 3 here;
