Having trouble restoring from a windows 10 backup to a new computer

    Hi Tim,

You can restore files from a backup from another computer by following the steps below:

    • Select the Start button, then select Control Panel >
System and Maintenance > Backup and Restore.
    • Choose Select another backup to restore files from, and then follow the steps in the wizard. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

This files will be restored in a folder having the "Username" of the one who created the file. To find the restored files:

    • Select the Start button, then select Computer.
    • Double-click the icon of the drive that the files are saved on, for example
      C:\.
    • Double-click the Users folder. You will see a folder for each user account.
    • Double-click the folder for the user name that was used to create the backup. The restored files will be in the various folders based on where they were located originally.

After performing the steps, kindly share with us the result.

  3. Backup and Restore from a windows 10 machine to a new windows 11 one.

    Hi NickBates,

    Thanks for posting here.

I’m afraid the "File History" feature is not designed for migration purpose, especially from Windows 10 to Windows 11. However, if you already have your files backup, I think we can still try the steps below, or the steps might fail to work.

    0. Before you begin, please make sure the file you’re dealing with are NOT the only copy, in other words, make sure you have all your files backup! And also, please follow the instruction step by step and do not skip anyone!

    1. On the new Windows 11, make sure the "File History" feature is turned off and the history is empty, and close "File History".

    2. Click Start > Update & Security > Backup, under Back up using File History, click More options > Restore files from a current backup.

    3. Plug in your external hard disk, then in the "File History" window, click Configure File History settings, when you can see your external hard disk in the list, select I Want To Use A Previous Backup On This File History Drive, then click to select your external hard disk, then on the list you may see the backup from your old Windows 10, select it, then click Turn on.

    4. Click Run now and allow "File History" to have a new backup.

    5. After the new backup is completed, click Restore personal files on the left panel, then you will see the most current backup, which we have made just now, click the left arrow, then you would see the old backup from Windows 10. If the backup is not shown, please close "File History", launch it again and check.

    6. When you see the old backup, please try to restore it.

As I mentioned above, this feature is not designed to migrate files from one computer to another, so if the steps above do not work, I think we can try the Backup and Restore (Windows 7) feature.

I hope the steps above helps, or if you have any further question, please feel free to let me know.

    Wish you a nice day!

    Best Regards,

Restoring Windows 10 Image using Macrium Reflect

In addition to the above. Here's my suggestion in step by step.
I assume you have Macrium Installed in your current HD and already made a backup copy.
    1. Connect your new HD via USB port and boot up.
    2. Run Macrium, click on Restore tab then select the Backup Image that you made to restore
    3. click on "select a different target disk" then select your new HD as destination

    4. Proceed to restore then Shutdown and disconnect the old HD and replace with the new HD
    5. Boot up with your new HD.
