  1. Setting up new MS Account and transferring files

I have a new Windows 11 desktop computer. I originally set it up using only a local account - not a MS account. I have a MS Account that I've had for years and still use it for Skype on several computers. But I don't want to use it for my new computer. I intend to buy Microsoft 365 using the new account and want to be able to use it to save all my files to OneDrive as backup but keep them on my desktop HD as well.I want to move the few documents in my old Onedrive account to my new one. I also want to set up my computer so it automatically saves/updates docs to both HD and Onedrive.I'm not sur

    :)

  2. Transferring an account on Windows 10 (EDITED)

    Hi,

As you are facing issue with transferring an account on windows 10, I would surely help you with it.

But I would like to know the below information,

    • Entire account: are you referring to a Microsoft account or a local user account?
If it is a Microsoft user account the same settings will synchronize to the new user account.

Steps to transfer the files to the new admin user account.

    • Open file explorer and double click on OS (C Setting up new MS Account and transferring files :).

    • Go to Users and try transferring all the data’s/ files to the new user account.

I hope the above information helps. Kindly let us know if you need any further assistance with Windows. We are glad to assist you.

    Thank you.

Settings can't be opened using the built-in administrator account

    Hello,
Unfortunately I have the same issue as Dabz from upgrading win7 to win10.
I've tried opening settings using all the suggested methods and it will not load using my account with Administrator access nor the built-in Administrator profile. I also tried other methods not listed such as using Run. Control panel is just a stepping stone to add users in Settings.
I'm also having explorer.exe issues, which I believe is preventing Settings from loading.
Using cmd (Admin) I successfully created a new user profile [and granted admin access also using cmd (Admin)], however win10 will not allow this account to log on. win10 does not list this new user within control panel but it does in the start menu. win10 will not allow to log in or switch to the new account via the start menu either.
I can access settings in Safe Mode but this will not allow me to create a new account.
Any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

Setting up new MS Account and transferring files

Multiple questions about installing - transfer accounts etc.

According to you, the accounts were Windows built-in admin, a local admin and standard user. None of them needs to be moved.

The built-in admin account, as the name says, will be there when you boot the laptop first time. It is disabled by default, you just need to enable it. For two other accounts, simply create same accounts on laptop.

Attach the HDD to laptop using an external USB enclosure, copy contents of data folders to respective folders on laptop.

You mentioned that the desktop accounts were / are local accounts, not Microsoft accounts. See the options to get Pro here:
If you can still access Windows on desktop, boot it up, make it a Microsoft account and link license to that MS account. Tutorials:
When done, see this tutorial. It will show step by step what do on the laptop to transfer desktop license to it: Use Activation Troubleshooter in Windows 10

This article is the best I have seen about when a license transfer is possible, and when not:
