Windows 10: Settings app instantly crashes, Power user looking for professional help with this.

I am faced with a well-known bug where the settings app will not open, it crashes immediately upon opening.


I’m a power user on windows and I’m not looking for generic response #125, so spare me that please.


I have tried almost everything I could find online including sfc/scannow, DISM, re-registering metro apps and so on.

This is what I know:


1) If I make another user account, the settings app works. NOW I know this is the main solution suggested but migrating my data successfully over to another account is far easier said than done so I’m trying to avoid this solution. (If you know a way to do this correctly, and I mean in a way in which no programs will be broken in the process, I’m all ears).

2) The settings app works normally in safe mode on the same account. That being said I tried disabling all startup programs and non-Microsoft services in an attempt to recreate this while logging in normally to no avail.

3) I cannot update, I’m on Version 10.0.17134 and if I use the Update Assistant (since I can’t use the settings app), it fails at 52% with the error “windows could not configure one or more system components” and then reverts any changes.

In regards to this I have uninstalled various programs/drivers in an attempt to fix the conflict. A suggestion I found was to disable “Internet Information Services” (IIS) as it sometimes causes this issue. But it fails and gives me the error “Windows couldn’t complete the requested changes” error code: 0x800F0922

4) Everything else works normally, I can still access the store and all other metro apps.


I’d really like to fix this once and for all, and I hope that someone here has the skills to do it.

SETTINGS APP CRASHES

Hello, thanks for replying to my question. Fortunately, I was able to solve the problem before viewing your reply. I created a temporary new user account using command prompt and used the new user account to update windows 10. As soon as my windows 10
is up to date the settings app no longer crash. For the time being, the problem is solved. If in the future this problem surface again I might try the steps you suggested.
