Windows 10: Several users at my company are reporting today that Windows 10 search is no longer working

Windows search now just pulls up a black bar and the functionality no longer works. I suspect this may be due to an update because it's odd that all of a sudden several users are experiencing the same issue.

E71 - Searching by company / address

My way of doing this is via "Groups"

It takes a bit of work to get this set up and an extra couple of steps when adding contacts but it works brilliantly.

Add a group for the name of the company, then add the people or person within that company to the group. You can then do searches for the company name.

I have 779 contacts as of today (and growing) and without this group feature would really be unable to cope.

File folder search function no longer works

I suggest you remove your cloud drive from the equation until it's clear indexing is working on your internal drive. Were you trying to use Windows search indexing to find things only in cloud storage? Items indexed should be as per your Indexing Options. I've certainly never tried using it to index something in cloud storage. Unless that appears as a drive letter you wont be able to specify it in Indexed locations.

But here Dropbox is reported as being indexed:

Does that mean searching indexed locations on your internal drive works?

Otherwise:
Please check search indexing is working as per post #4.
Then try open explorer at an indexed folder and try searching for a file on your disk.

 

Windows 10 Start search no longer works

Many people are having this issue, and there's a lot of crazy suggestions out there. I've tried them all, and nothing worked until I did this:

• Delete the directory: C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy [REBOOT]
• Run the following command from Powershell with Admin privileges: Add-AppxPackage -Register "C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy\AppxManifest.xml" -DisableDevelopmentMode [REBOOT]

For Step 1, you'll have to boot to a WinPE drive, or maybe Safe Mode because the directory will be locked. But, if you do these two steps in this order it will fix the problem.
