Windows 10: SFC scan and DISM restore health not working

My original problem was the error code 0xc0000006 whenever opening most programs on my computer and when i looked up a solution they suggested using sfc /scannow and DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth in powershell/cmd with admin. When i try SFC, i get the error "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation". So then i am asked to try the DISM check but when i try that one i get the message "The specified buffer contains ill-formed data. The DISM log file can be found at C:\WINDOWS\Logs\DISM\dism.log" This has led me down this deep rabbit hole of varying diffe

When should I run DISM scans? Also, is this a good order to run them in: DISM scan health, restore health, and then SFC.

Yea, but if something corrupts it won't detect anything. I would use the DISM command to check the health and then restore it. I usually just skip the health check and just do a Health restore. Then after the Health restore then I do the sfc /scannow command.

Code: sfc /scannow[/quote] first I would do what @Solaris17 said to check his boot record. *Toast :toast: Also, a fresh start and keep his files like you suggested is a good option as well. *Toast :toast: Maybe even check to see if he has any restore points.

 

How to get damn DISM to work?

Thx guys, I'll compress this data into a blog post. For all the so called guides I've read, not a single one mentioned it has to be WIM file (some listed even ESD which clearly doesn't work) or that certain ISO images don't work with DISM.

After I've done DISM thingie, SFC also managed to repair stuff. Which is what I've needed here.
