Windows 10: Shadow copy error on windows backup

I can no longer get a clean backup with Microsoft backup. I keep getting a shadow copy error code 0x81000037.

Method 1

I suggest you to make sure “Volume shadow copy Service” is enabled.

Follow these steps:

• 
  Press “Windows key + R” from the keyboard.
  
• 
  Type “services.msc” without quotes in the “Run” Window and hit Enter.
  
• 
  Locate “Volume shadow copy" service.
  
• 
  Right click on it and select “Start” option.
  
• 
  Close the “Services” Window.
  
• 
  Check if the issue persists.
  

Method 2

Place the computer in Clean Boot and then try to perform Backup.

Windows Defender incorrectly reports threat in Volume Shadow Copy

I think you misread my question.

I did what you suggest immediately after I first downloaded the file.

The problem is NOT that the file itself gets flagged -- it does not as it is in the exclusions list.

The problem is that the exclusions list applies to the absolute path to the file.

What Windows Defender is complaining about is the COPY of the file that is present in the Volume Shadow Copy, NOT the original file.

There appears to be no way to tell Windows Defender to ignore the COPY of the file in the Volume Shadow Copy. Then, every time my backup program (Retrospect) runs, Windows Defender detects the file IN THE VOLUME SHADOW COPY and complains.

I had set the Volume Shadow Copy service to Automatic and explicitly started it before my last backup attempt before I posted my problem. I tried your suggestion of running the backup from a clean boot but it failed again, with the same error code.
