Windows 10: Sharing folders with write access

I have a need to share some folders/directories with write access on a small office network. I can't figure out how to do this now.

What's needed: Some machines have write access to some folders, everything has read-access to everything shared we don't need

or desire anything more refined than that.


The scenario: A small number of Windows laptops and a Windows desktop, which has attached storage devices you could think of it as a NAS. Many tablets , phones Android or Apple, and a Linux laptop or 2 that also use the desktop's file service.

The Windows machines are now all Windows 10 build 2004, various Pro and Home.


Everybody has read access to folders from the desktop file server. Some of the laptops also act as file servers. Read access works well as described below.


The need to use the desktop's attached storage by the laptops has developed. Some generate a lot of product data files, images that need a secondary backup. In most cases the laptops are generating their own backups and at least some of these should be stored off the laptop. Laptop disk space is limited in most cases. The non-Windows devices could use attached storage for backup too, but the need is not great at present.


The problem: write access hasn't been used in years, but it used to work in Windows 7/XP. Windows 7 had homegroups that sort of worked. "workgroup" in Windows 10 doesn't seem to do anything.

It's been found that turning password permission OFF in advanced settings was necessary to make the remote files accessible to all the devices. That's the current setting. Turning password permission ON shuts everything off - no remote host has any access.

No password dialog ever appears when trying to mount these file systems.

There doesn't seem to be a way to share folders on one system that are specific to a host or a specific user on another system - the share parameter for Location is always greyed out. I guess that's the loss of homegroup.

It's conceivable to have the same accounts on different Windows hosts but that's a maintenance problem, there's a fair amount of coming and going. Not clear how to support the random tablet or phone either. We don't want a scenario where everyone has to login for read access, even if that's possible - it doesn't seem to be right now.


What can be done? Any suggestions appreciated.

Cannot access shared network drive


Personally, I wouldnt use Everyone. If anyone hacks into you, they have full access to everything and can demolish everything on your raid. I would rather set up accounts and access separately for each person. That way, I know who did all that damage. In the end with a little extra work, I feel more secure by using Authenticated Users.

step 1 create non-microsoft account and without email and address without admin rights
step 2 share a drive or folder to specific user account (if Everyone is listed, remove it)
step 3 set security > add Authenticated Users (if more than 1 account) or add specific users
step 3a remove Everyone from list
step 3b uncheck full control and write for all items listed except SYSTEM and Admin account.
step 4 right click Start > Computer Management > System Tools > Shared Folders > Shares ... to verify settings and change anything else. You can also see the number of connections to each share here.

 

Cannot access shared network drive

I could scream! so much time wasted on this stupid error, as if time is not precious enough!
It probably would work fine if I could see the other computer! But I cannot see the other computer!

If you both use the same computer

You can put the files you want to share in the Shared Documents folder. Files stored in the Shared Documents folder or its subfolders are always available to other users on your computer.
