  1. Sharing permissions and access from another PC

    Hi all,

I'm sure I'm missing something really simple but so far I've been tearing my hair out trying to figure this out and have all but given up and was hoping someone here might be able to give me some advice?

I currently have three PCs (Two Win10s and a Win7) on a local network and would like to set up a shared folder on one that allows the other two to have access to read/write while everyone else only gets read access. I have tried various suggestions online, including HomeGroups and the advanced user security/shared permissions but so far with testing I can only seem to give everyone permissions or no one. All three currently only have local accounts.

Is what I'm trying to do actually possible? It would seem to me to be a simple request to do yet I can't get my head around it.

    Thanks,
    IC

    :)

    Cannot access shared folder

Upgraded a PC in my home network to windows 10 and enabled file sharing as well as joining the homegroup. I can access the shared folders specified in homegroup, no problem. I wanted to share another folder on same PC and set it to share with EVERYONE. I
went to permissions and set it to FULL CONTROL. The shared folder is F:\Programs and contains some executables. I felt it necessary to mention this since in my search for a solution I found that NTFS permissions may be picky with exe files.

Anyway nothing worked. I cannot access the folder from any of my PCs. The error dialogue is ALWAYS "you do not have permission to access this folder. Contact your administrator...".

What I found long ago is that sharing with EVERYONE does not mean everyone, even those in your homegroup. I even changed the owner of the folder to myself (admin) instead of System. Have gone through many different attempts to fix this to no avail. Why is
this such an incredibly difficult issue to resolve...? Cannot MS adhere to their sharing terminology so that sharing with EVERYONE means just that?

Hope to find solution (other than the generic, useless run troubleshooter suggestions). Much thanks.

Cannot access file share on windows 7 PC from my windows 10 laptop

    Hello,

I have a file share on my windows 7 PC and I'm trying to access them from my windows 10 laptop.

I have locked down my file share on my windows 7 PC, and only my username (which is my windows 7 pc user name) can access them.

Using the user name and password from my windows 7 account I try to access the files on my windows 10 machine using those credentials.

I can map the file share to "my computer" but when I click on it, it says that I do not have permission to access the folder.

I then removed my credentials from the file share and added "everyone" to the security permissions. Of course I can now access it from my windows 10 laptop, but I need the file share to be locked down and not accessible to everyone on the network.

How can I fix this? Thanks in advanced!!!!!

Sharing permissions and access from another PC

You cannot set permissions per machine, you have to set them per user or group instead. The user(s) and group(s) you give permissions must be present (active and enabled) on the computer in question.

An example. I have shared a folder, given everyone the read rights:

On the machine where this shared folder is I have a user @AnMSAccountEmail.com. For this user I have given full rights:

I can also give special rights to any group. Here I grant all administrator accounts of this PC the full right. All standard user accounts would then fall under Everyone, only having the read rights:

Really simple, works like a dream (at least I have no sharing issues on any of my Windows 10 machines).

I have been going crazy all morning troubleshooting my sharing problem. I built a home server with an external 4tb hd. I want all the computers on my network to back up to this drive. My wife's 2 laptops just could not access that drive. FINALLY I did network and sharing troubleshooting on my home server pc. It turns out my home server pc had the windows firewall on, blocking other users, even thought I set up the home group as wide open.
    stupid old firewall
it all works now but man what a waste of time
