  1. Shortcut to Windows Update in Win10 v1709 anomaly.

By MOUNTING an ISO, I have updated TWO v1703 system to v1709. In one, the previous shortcut to Windows Update still works, in the other it opens a Documents folder instead. A copy of the shortcut that works in one, is ineffective in the other.
How to get back a working shortcut ?

    :)

  2. How to "Manually" Install Win10 v1607 Updates

I am currently running Win10, version 1607, and want to keep this version until after 2017 tax reporting. I have "2" v1607 updates (KB4056887 and KB4040411) to install in my Update History which require a Restart. I keep getting this annoying "blue Update
Message" displayed that I continually override. Win10 v1709 (Fall Creators Update) is also sitting in my Update List.

I did not "Auto Update" to Win10 v1703 (Creators Update) or Win10 v1709 (Fall Creators Update) in anticipation of your typical Microsoft update anomalies that I don't have time to troubleshoot. Additionally, I really don't need all of those fancy 3D & movie
    creation features at this time.

So is there a way to "manually" update those "2" v1607 updates, to get rid of the annoying "Update Message", without also updating to v1709 (Fall Creators Update)??

Windows 10 Grey Cross on Icons

    Hi All

I have a new Thinkpad running Win10 Home (v1709, build 16299.309) and I've suddenly got grey crosses (x) in the bottom left corner of icons and shortcuts on my desktop.

This appears to be a known problem with Windows but I've not found any recent advice for Win 10 users. Can anyone help?

    Thanks

Shortcut to Windows Update in Win10 v1709 anomaly.

@Sebastian42, the puzzle is not why the shortcut doesn't work in 1709, but why it still does on one machine. Apparently since os build 16226 the behaviour was changed...

  5. Did the trick - thank you. As for the one that still works - I'll let sleeping dogs lie.

  6. The system that kept a functioning WinUpdate shortcut, also still has functioning Gadgets, which the other system also lost. For what it is worth, the 'good' system has no Java installed; and Flash Update is greyed out. How to restore Gadgets ?
If it is unacceptable to add this here in a solved thread, I hope it will be turned into a new thread.

I know there are people who missed them, and that there are hacks to get them to work in 10, but it's not something I would want to do (but at least we have a plausible explanation as to why the shortcuts still worked). Sorry, but I can't help you there...

    ...maybe others might have suggestions?

  8. Shortcut to Windows Update in Win10 v1709 anomaly.

It turns out that the someone who suggested - 'just uninstall them, then re-install them' was right. That is all it took to get them back using "DesktopGadgetsRevived_v2.exe".
The paradox remains that the 'identical' system without Flash or Java, did not need them restored.
