Windows 10: Should I attempt to install Imgburn?

I took the Win10 upgrade (from Win7) and I've been installing the rest of my programs. One program that I wanted back was ImgBurn. I never used it a lot, but it was always a good/lightweight program to have on hand.

That being said, many people (including myself) have been well aware of the fact that Lightening UK (the company that publishes this freeware) has been known over the last couple of years to partner themselves with others that install crapware with the installation of the program. Fortunately, (in previous years) it seems safe enough to work around that by carefully doing a custom install and making sure the appropriate boxes were checked (or unchecked) during the install.

However, what's interesting now is the fact that I can't even get it downloaded using Google Chrome. It's not a compatibility problem with Win10 but rather Google seeing the entire download as crapware and rejecting it outright. The bigger question now becomes, should I even attempt to reinstall this program? Has the crapware in the published links of Imgburn gotten so bad that it's not even recommended to install the software? If that is the case, can someone give me another alternative for a lightweight dependable CD/DVD burning program that is now popular? Thanks for any replies here.

PS It's a shame that Lightening UK has partnered themselves with crapware. There was a time where anyone could download that program and not even worry about a custom installation--let alone now days where a browser (like Chrome) won't even accept the download.

Printer issue when I attempt to install one I get BSOD

I am installing printers on my companies computers but when I attempt to install one I get BSOD. Has anyone had this problem or knows the fix. We have tried manually installing them and can get one install but if we try another one it will BSOD again

Did you get the appropriate drivers yet and did you try installing them and check if the issue persists?

What is the make and model of your Printer?

I have BurnAware Free and it works well. It doesn't give all the info about what's going on like ImgBurn does but it does pretty much everything. ImgBurn carried over during my Win 10 upgrade so I still have that as well.

The ImgBurn setup downloads fine using IE. My Chrome seems to have gotten messed up in the upgrade. It won't update and the extensions are acting strange. I'm going to uninstall it and reinstall.

Okay, I had to reinstall Chrome to get it to work right. I tried downloading ImgBurn from Majorgeeks and it downloaded without a hitch.

 

Thanks for the recommendation of BurnAware Free. I'll have to check it out. As for ImgBurn, I lost it because I decided to do a clean install of Win10 (after the initial upgrade). My clean install went pretty fast with the USB installer and then I just used the backup that I previously created in Win7 to throw back all my personal data and settings onto the OS. Obviously, reinstalling programs takes a little time, but I didn't have any problems....except with the ImgBurn issue. Glad you got your Chrome working right. Thanks again for the reply.

 

This is an update to my previous post. I tried going back and using the Majorgeeks download link, but it doesn't seem to make any difference (whether I use Chrome, IE, or Edge). I've got Malwarebytes installed on my PC (in addition to my anti-virus software). Malwarebytes instantly picks up on any of the Imgburn download links as potentially damaging software and stops the download/installation. I think this is my sign to leave well enough alone. Too bad Lightening UK used to have a good reputation for their software (Imgburn). But now they've chosen to partner themselves with a bunch of crapware, which in my view has ruined their name.

I did download BurnAware Free and now have it installed. It looks like it will be fine; and of course no need to do a custom installation to avoid any crapware.

Okay, so it's Malwarebytes being a bit too aggressive (in my opinion since avoiding installing the extra stuff is pretty easy) and not the browser. BurnAware does a fine job though and is actually easier to use than ImgBurn.

Thanks for sharing that link. It appears this older version came out sometime around 2009. Is there much difference in the functionality of that older version and the latest one? I am assuming the answer is no.

I downloaded this older version using the link you provided. I will keep that as well as BurnAware Free. I am also going to keep the setup file of this adware free version in case I ever need to reinstall it again.

 

I agree, the crapware stuff is pretty easy to avoid (particularly people who are alerted to it in advance). I reinstalled the latest version of Imgburn a year ago (when I put a new SSD in my PC) while I was still on Win7. And obviously, because I knew about the crapware being inserted (as default) into the ImgBurn installation, I was ready for it and checked/unchecked the boxes (using custom install) as appropriate.

But this go around with Win10, I've got Malwarebytes installed and I didn't want to manipulate that program just to force the download/install of ImgBurn. I do think it's a shame that Lightening UK has partnered with crapware (on the latest builds) of ImgBurn. And no doubt there are many unsuspecting people that fall victim to this crapware that is difficult to get rid of once it is installed on a PC.

 

I have been reliably using the Windows 10 built-in image burner via Windows Explorer. I was using Imgburn prior but decided not to install at this point. Not a heavy CD/DVD burner but was able to burn ISOs of Windows 10 Pro which was used for clean installs without any problems.

 

Yes it is. I have an older version of it on my laptop. I keep the older version because it includes a labeling function that includes Lightscribe label burning. The newer versions do not have the labeler any more. I might try the new one on this machine though and If I like it, I may dump BurnAware.

 

Download the imgburn setup exe.

Open the exe with 7zip as if it were an archive.

Extract the the imgburn.exe and the sounds folder.

Don't install it.

I tried the free version of Ashampoo but uninstalled it because it can not create bootable discs. BurnAware and ImgBurn both can.

My older version of Ashampoo on my win 7 laptop can as well and also includes the labeler program. I think it's version 12 but may even be 11. They offered it on special because it was a full version of the previous release and then they tried to get you to buy the new one. You had to ask for a unique key to activate it. They don't do it that way any more. Now they give you a stripped down version and want you to upgrade it. I guess the old way didn't result in enough sales.
