Should I Be Concerned and Extra Cautious

Hmmm....I don't know. We need to have a look at the log; post it here, and we'll see if we can figure out what went wrong.

Yes, that sounds about right. See you tomorrow.

  3. I think I forgot to mention that I also ran verify on the 'less suspicious' of the 2 earlier backups and it gave the same error message.

Since the backups are 'flawed' should I go ahead and delete them?

    thanks

    Hmmm...Nothing stands out to me.
Have you tried verifying any of the images you created to see what it says? I'd like to have at least 2 good images before we proceed with the upgrade. *Smile

  6. I will do so.

I hope you are cogitating and will have another suggestion soon.

In the meantime I'm working on answering Post #27 to the best of my ability.

  7. Here's where I am (in red.)

Let's just recap here to I am thinking straight:

DONE (pending verification)-Install Macrium Reflect Free and make an IMAGE of your entire hard drive as it is now, on an external drive. Make sure you have the verify option selected, so you know you have a good image. Be sure to create the rescue media it needs to boot your system from, should you have to restore the image. Then, make sure you can boot the system from the rescue media. Restoring an image will put everything back exactly as it was, including all programs and data.

Not DONE, verification fails! Under discussion and study.

Is this done? Go to your OEM's web support site and download all updates relevant to your system, especially BIOS and chipset updates.

I find nothing more up-to-date than what was offered in 2014 when I installed Win7

Use ShowkeyPlus to grab your current W7 keycode and write it down. Note: This does not work for an OEM:SLP W7 key. You must use the code on the COA sticker if it is an OEM Installed W7.

I have this printed for reference - both ID and Installed Key

Is this done? Remove O2000 and install LibreOffice.

    I upgraded LibreOffice from 4.2.4.2 to 5.1.4

Will Microsoft office 2000 work on Windows 10?

This hit suggests that O2000 works in compatibility mode. I certainly don't want to uninstall until I am certain I can actually move to Win 10 on this machine

Is this done? Did you get "No integrity violations found? Open an Admin Command Prompt and run sfc /scannow

    Done

    Is this done? Install 7-zip

Done. I discovered to past versions and deleted them. When is this important?

Is this done? Install Driver Magician Lite (free) - to back up your current drivers (in red) to an external hard drive.

    Done

Is this done? Scan your system with Malwarebytes Antimalware Free to verify it is clean.

    Done

Is this done? Update all software to current revs and delete any software that is not active/updated regularly or compatible with W10.

This looks like an 'open question' in that "Add/Remove Programs" says I have 54 programs installed…Is there an 'easy' way to create a digital copy of the filenames and when the files were installed?
I've examined the list. Nothing is older than early 2014 when I installed Win7. I have no idea about updates.

Is this done? Please save the file to your Toshiba drive. Run Belarc Advisor and print out the system inventory it provides.

    Printed and saved both

Crystal Disk Info will be OK to leave on; I can confirm it lives through the upgrade without issue. Remove any 3rd-party anti-virus software, hard drive monitoring software, and Speccy if you have it.

Is this done? Run Ccleaner Free on the registry.

Not DONE. I believe I need to wait until have removed any 3rd-party anti-virus software and hard drive monitoring software

Download the W10 ISO from MS TechBench

DONE. Is it better to copy this to a thumb drive or a DVD? I ran the Win7 ISO from a thumb drive.

Disconnect everything from the computer except, keyboard mouse and monitor. Do not have any drives besides the OS drive connected during the upgrade.

NOT DONE because my system is not yet ready (but I am, in spirit.)

    thanks

  8. Should I Be Concerned and Extra Cautious

I just ran a 2 hour attempt to back up my data and it also failed.

Should I uninstall the Macrium Reflect program, redownload it, and reinstall it?

Might I have done something wrong in the install?

This time I could go all-out and shut all applications down before running it. I don't think I did the first time.

    thanks

This is so strange! I suppose it couldn't hurt to re-download and reinstall, but I can't understand what's going wrong. I don't see anything different from your log compared to my log. I'm so sorry about this - this part should be so easy....

  10. Thank you for persisting!

Is there a Macrium Reflect 'guru' or two that I could PM and ask (just in case one is away on extended vacation?)

    Thanks again

  11. Perhaps I'm being paranoid, but I Googled 'uninstall macrium reflect free' and opened a fire hose.

"macrium reflect free" 6 uninstallþ - ÈÍË Googleþ

It is hard to decide if might dig a deeper hole if I try to use the Win7 uninstall utility if I intend to reinstall. I certainly don't want to go there.

For example, high up among the hits were 'maxuninstaller' and 'totaluninstaller.' These look like a research project on each just to trust them.

    thanks

I'll answer your post #35 here:

Macrium - still working on this. Do Crucial have a "toolbox" for their SSDs? I don't want you to run CHKDSK on an SSD unless you have to. Is your SSD firmware up-to-date?

Updates: okay - nothing since 2014 and all those are installed.

W7 Keycode: you have this from when you purchased it, written down.

Office: LibreOffice has been upgraded. Yes, leave O2000 on there until we can get Macrium sorted.

sfc /scannow shows "no integrity violations found".

Drivers (in red) are backed up.

Software updates: There's no easy way to do this. For instance, Adobe Reader DC has to be opened, then click on Help>Check for Updates. Some programs, like Ccleaner or Speccy, will tell you there's an update as soon as you open them, if you selected that option when they were installed. Java and Flash can be checked through opening their respective programs in Control Panel and clicking on Update. It's time consuming. There is one program I know of - Secunia - and I have never used it, but here is the download for it:

Download Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI) - MajorGeeks

This should tell you what needs to be updated.

MBAM has been run and system is malware-free.

You are right - Don't run Ccleaner on the registry until the 3rd-party anti-virus is removed.

    Belarc system inventory is done.

    RE: the ISO
This is the reason you need 7-zip. We will use 7-zip to mount the ISO directly inside your W7 running operating system. Then we will run setup.exe from the mounted ISO.

    Hope that answers everything! *Smile

Should I Be Concerned and Extra Cautious

Using the Programs and Features to do an uninstall is fine for that. But let's try checking on your SSD for firmware updates, or a Crucial Toolbox, to check the health of the SSD.

In speaking with another member here, it seems that, since the images are being created, but they're not being successfully verified, makes it sound like a problem reading the disk. That's why we suggested Crucial tools to see if we can check the health of the SSD.

This should be the link you need:

EDIT: Let's make sure your new Toshiba drive is healthy as well:
Seatools - please run the long test on the new Toshiba drive.

  15. In March 2014 I did a clean install of Win7/Pro x64, migrating from XP/Pro.

It was not easy. I had to swap drives (and BIOS settings) for a week or more and then reinstall working software.

I 'explored' image backups, but never put the effort into learning how. My experience in this thread is 'off putting' at a minimum.

I have an currently unused 128 GB Crucial (CT128M550SSD1) in my system. Can it be used for a clean install? Will MS activate it if I can supply the Win7 Installed Key and the Product ID?

Can I use the approach I used to upgrade to Win7? I connected only had one drive to the MOBO and the had the ISO on a thumb drive. When I got in trouble, I disconnected that drive for the new OS, reconnected the old one, and I could work and post from just one system.

Or do I need to have a key file on the new drive, perhaps even a working version of Win7 on it for Win10 to install as a 'free upgrade?'

I hate to think about rebuilding the programs, but I could download Macrium Reflect early and see if it runs under Win10.

    thanks
