Should I downgrade to Windows 8.1?

Hi, my laptop is an Acer Aspire ES1-512 with an Intel Celeron N2840 CPU, 4 GB RAM and integrated video card and I have installed Windows 10 Pro on it. I like to use it for browsing the internet (Youtube, Reddit, etc.) and to play Team Fortress 2. The performance of my laptop is very slow, compared to similar laptops online (Intel Celeron N2830 / N2840 / N2820 CPU Review with Benchmark, Gaming, and Specs | Processors for Laptop & Tablet PCs - Specs, Reviews, Comparison | Laptoping). Now, should I go back to Windows 8.1 to boost my performance or is there something I'm doing wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

  2. Should i downgrade to windows 7?

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

I understand that you receive a black screen after login and the Bluetooth drivers are not getting detected. We will help you to resolve the issue.

I would appreciate if you could answer a few questions to narrow down the issue.

    • What is the make and model of the computer?
    • Did you receive any error message?
    • Did you install any third party security applications?
    • To which account are you logged in to. Is it a Microsoft account?
I suggest you to perform SFC scan and check if it helps.

System File Checker (SFC) is a utility in Microsoft Windows that allows users to scan for and restore corruptions in Windows system files. Perform System File Check (SFC), and then check if this fixes the issue.

    1. Press the Windows button + X on your keyboard, a mini dialogue box will appear.

    2. Choose Command Prompt (Admin). You must run the command prompt in Administrator level.

    3. On the command prompt type sfc /scannow and hit enter.

    4. If everything went okay and no errors were found, restart your computer and see if the issue re-occurs.

I also suggest you to uninstall and reinstall the Bluetooth driver.

Step 1: Press Windows Key +
R on your desktop screen to go to run command box.

Step 2: Type devmgmt.msc and press
    Enter.

Step 3: Look for Bluetooth driver, right-click and then click
    Uninstall/Remove Device.

Step 4: When you are prompted to confirm that you want to remove the device, click
    OK.

    Step 6: Restart
    the computer.

Step 7: Windows will automatically install the driver.

If the issue persists, I suggest you to download the latest drivers from the manufactures website.

Hope the information helps. Let us know if you need further assistance. We will be happy to help.

    Thank you.

  3. Should i downgrade to windows 7?

Like a week ago i upgraded my windows 7 to 10, but i don t really like the results, when my computer starts up, it's always just a black screen, it disappears after like 2-3 minutes, and since I'm using bluetooth headphones it's annoying when it
doesn't detect my device. Should i downgrade or does it get better?

Should I downgrade to Windows 8.1?

    Hi there

I am curious why you think Windows 8.1 would boost your performance. Windows 10 is a solid performer for games and is similar if not slightly better than 8.1.

You could have a look at what programs you have installed and remove any you no longer use. Also update your drivers to the latest for all your hardware. Laptop makers usually have a place where you can download reasonably uptodate drivers specific to your laptop.

I was thinking that because on the site, it says that they're using Windows 8.1 and because they get higher fps I assumed that Windows 8.1 was better. Thanks for the info though! Also, I have the latest drivers installed and only have some essential programs (WinRar, Chrome, Firefox, Avast Free, Notepad++, Steam and TF2, Python 3.5, Java, CCleaner and Microsoft Office 2013). I have also disabled some services for better performance with "Easy Service Optimizer". Do you think if I clean reinstall Windows 10 and download only Chrome and Team Fortress 2 I will get higher frames?

You have a similar software collection to me. You might want to consider the new Bitdefender Free which was just updated as its supposed to be fairly light. Avast can be a hog on lower end hardware (no disrespect intended).

A clean install is certainly worthwhile and with the new install system there they have digital licenses that stick with your hardware, its pretty easy just to clean install and itl auto activate (don't enter the key during install).

OK, I'll do a clean install and then I'll only install Chrome, Bitdefender Free and TF2. I hope it's faster after that. Also, do you think a new SSD and 8 GB RAM would make the game (and system) run better?

Should I downgrade to Windows 8.1?

Its always worth installing an SSD. Do you know which motherboard you have or which version of sata it has. If its older than sata 3 then Id consider memory upgrade first.

You won't get more performance going back to Windows 8.1

Your Laptop needs 8 GB of RAM for starters. The integrated HD graphics will take some of that depending on the applications you use.

The processor is a low cost Celeron which is just not as good as i3/i5/i7 series.

A SSD may make starting an application faster but that's about it. Large capacity ones are also expensive. RAM is faster and much better value for money.

OK, I clean installed Windows 10 and now it's faster! I also ordered 8 GB of DDR3 RAM on Amazon. Thanks all for the help!
