I will be keeping the wireless turned off most of the time on my desktop, as I use it for live pro audio. Is there a registry hack to put the switch in there, even if the computer is not a laptop???

    :)

  2. Desktop (not laptop) Airplane Mode Stuck On = No WiFi

This is a Dell desktop computer and not a laptop. There is no physical switch to turn Airplane Mode on or off. When I updated to Window's 10 Airplane mode is stuck ON and I cannot shut it off. That means no WiFi which for me means not access to the
Network/Internet. I am stuck Please Help!

I dont have Wifi ON/OFF Switch

    Airplane mode?

    my computer mobile device?

    I mentioned above that's it's a desktop.

there used to be a switch to turn Wifi on or off.

    where did that go?

i can't seem to connect to any wifi signals...

i truly think my wifi is off.

Airplane mode: ms-settings:network-airplanemode Hi, you can use the above when creating a new shortcut, if that's what you need- I'm not sure.
Remember you can access Flight Mode ('Airplane Mode') from the Action Centre (icon in system tray in the taskbar).

Here are some more FYI: Manage Wi-Fi: ms-settings:network-wifisettings Mobile hotspot: ms-settings:network-mobilehotspot Wi-Fi: ms-settings:network-wifi

  5. well, none of these settings
exist on my install because my machine is a desktop. I'm obviously going to have to add something to the registry to get the airplane mode switch to appear.

  6. Unfortunately, a web search for this is impossible, as hundreds of people using win 10 have had problems with their airplane mode switch getting stuck ON, and that problem uses all the same search terms!!

Sorry, perhaps you need more detail as to how to create a shortcut.
You won't find those settings as such.
    So.
    Right click on your desktop.
    Click new, click shortcut.
Type one of those strings in the box.
    For example ms-settings:network-airplanemode
    Click Next
Give the shortcut an appropriate name.
Now double click on the shortcut to use it.
    To give it an icon,
    Rt click it, click Properties
Click 'Change icon' and browse for an appropriate picture.
(You may wish to download an appropriate picture)

You need to decide which one or ones are useful to you.

What happens when you click on the icon near the clock- a box with a small v at the bottom containing 3 lines? You should get the action centre with tiles appear from the right. You will see two tiles related to Wifi.

These open Settings at the appropriate point.

I'm now guessing you actually want sthg to turn Wifi off automatically at startup- sorry, your first question is unclear, but appears to imply you want it off. Is that so?

Or is this what you want to see (in Settings?)

    That's what this does: ms-settings:network-airplanemode

    Hello dalchina,

I don't think the problem is with creating an Airplane Mode shortcut.

Instead, the issue is that it's a desktop computer, and not being able to toggle on/off Airplane Mode. *Sad

    Woodslanding,

I see that you gigabyte z97 itx motherboard has a dual band WIFI card. You could enable and disable the Wi-Fi adapter from "Network and Sharing Center" as needed if you like.

  9. Yes, that is true, and it's what I've always done. But I'm sure there is a registry setting that will fool windows into thinking I have a laptop. Since I move this computer around a lot, that would not be inappropriate. It's so nice to have that little icon for flight mode in the network and notifications windows from the taskbar.....

Hopefully from that one can get control of 'Airplane Mode' for a desktop.. or at least fool the OS appropriately.
I can understand MS removing the GUI elements for Airplane Mode for a desktop, but not why that leads to problems for some desktop owners.. but hey, this is Win 10.

I can see what woodslanding is after now- to force the desktop OS to expose elements of the GUI reserved for laptop configurations.

Hmm... "Ladies and gentlemen, please ensure your desktop is safely stowed under the seat in front of you. Please be aware the voltage available from the power outlets is 240V. Would visitors coming from the US and other areas please take special care to avoid potential fire risk. An extinguisher can be found under you seats. Thank you. Have a safe flight..."

  13. Show airplane mode switch on wifi menu on desktop computer

Hah! Yeah, not planning to actually fly with this thing.... but I think the chances of my wifi interfering with my show are actually a lot higher than a laptop's wifi interfering with airplane navigation!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like the registry values above are what gets changed when the USER pushes the flight mode button, not what the windows INSTALLER puts in the registry to enable flight mode elements in the windows GUI to begin with.

Easier to just disable the network adaptor, seems like. If it's not an easy fix, I won't worry about it--I just thought it would be fun *Wink

  14. well it just occured to me to search the registry for appropriately named keys, and I came across one called "isflighted"

A google search turns up nothing. I may back up the registry and try setting it to 1.

I have a suspicion that key could just as well have to do with Insider Preview status - don't be surprised if it has nothing to do with airplane mode. Can you give the full path in the registry to that key?
