5. Alright I'm not sure what to make of this so some insight from someone would help.

What I've done:
1) Clean installed Windows 8.1 on PC using generic key
2) Activated the install with my Windows 8 key
3) Upgraded to Windows 10
4) Windows 10 is activated

However this is what I'm getting:

ShowKeyPlus [IMG]

For some reason it says no OEM key is present in the firmware. I was under the impression the upgrade to Windows 10 meant I would get an OEM key stored in the UEFI firmware chip (and I do have a UEFI compatible mobo) as Windows is activated.

The reason I'm asking is because I plan on clean installing since I just bought an SSD. If I proceed will I still be able to activate Windows 10?

6. Microsoft will not add a key to the BIOS. They will not modify it in any way. It's proprietary to the manufacturer and basically off limits to Microsoft as far as modifying it goes. When you activated Window 10 after the upgrade a hardware ID was stored on the Microsoft activation server for that PC. When you need to do a clean install of Windows 10, just leave the product code field blank and click skip this. It will activate, mine did.

Oh, and by the way. You don't have to do the install with a generic key activate with an 8.0 key stuff anymore. not if you get your install media from here. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...-refresh-media That install media will use Windows 8.0 and 8.1 keys for install and activation. Even OEM embedded keys, it will read them from the BIOS automatically. You just have to install the version matching what was installed at the factory.

7. That was a speedy reply, thank you.

That does make sense now you mention it.

As for the the second part, does that mean if I want to clean install Windows 8.1 I can just get the 8.1 install media and install it (and activate) with my Windows 8 key? Because I remember a few years back when it wouldn't work if your original key was a Windows 8 key, you would have to either use the generic Win 8.1 then activate with the original Win 8 OR Install and activate Win 8 then update.

Worked for me on clean install but it is picking up the generic key (not mine at all).

I'm not sure if it is useful this information....

Code: Windows Product Key Information Product Name: Windows 10 Pro Product ID: *****-*****-*****-AA900 Installed Key: *****-******-*****-*****-3V66T OEM Key: OEM key not present in firmware
9. Yes, you can just install 8.1 now and it will install and activate with a Windows 8.0 key. It's the new option one here, http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials...ad-create.html Option two is the old way you were talking about.

10.
Everybody that did the free upgrade got the same generic key. Activation is tied to your hardware hash. There is a home generic key and a Pro generic key. You don't need to know the key or even bother entering one on a clean install. Assuming you did the free upgrade already.

Now that you have done an upgraded install to windows 10 you can also just do a clean install to 10. There is no need to install windows 8 or 8.1 then install 10. That is an upgraded install and not a clean install as you are saying. Once you have activated the windows 10 upgrade you can just use the USB install or the ISO you downloaded using the Windows 10 media creation tool to boot and install a truly clean windows 10 OS. Just skip the entering of the product key and it will activate once the OS is fully up and running.

Some time ago I posted the request for help below, but noone has relied. *Sad
Is there really no help to get or have I posted on the wrong Forum?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I earlier used the VBscript found on

http://www.howtogeek.com/206329/how-...-product-keys/.

I have never tried it on a reinstalltion, but it does not give the same result as ShowkeyPlus. Who should I trust?

Sorry for the late reply. That script is outdated. ShowKeyPlus has superseded it.
