Windows 10: Shut down my laptop at night, booted it up in the morning and it says fixing c: stage 1

Hello, this is my first post so apologies for any mistakesSo I was done using my computer at night and shut it off normally, in the morning I turned it on and it booted up to the Windows logo and immediately the Fixing c: stage 1 x% n of n total 7% ETA time prompt appeared at the bottom of the screen, so I looked for some answers on the internet meanwhile I let it run for about an hour or so, it reaches 20%, but at the end I rebooted the computer using the power button method as I needed to use the computer later in the day, this time the computer booted up and gave me the option to skip t

Fixing c: stage 1: error

Hi

I have this error in my laptop( 3 years old) from today morning.

Fixing c: stage 1: 64% estimated time 9 hours

The estimated time keeps increasing. The information on online is confusing. Some say to let it run forever others to abort immediately and boot from usb. I have my important data in the hard disk. Which is the best way to save my data?? Please help.

 

Fixing C: in stages

I have a new laptop and as backing up my files to an external drive using Robocopy. It was going on for a long time and I didn't see any progress and was unable to find it in Task Manager, so I finally just shut it down for the night. In the morning when I rebooted, I got the message "Fixing C: Stage 1, .....ETA 20.31..." I left it alone for a while, then rebooted, and the same message came back. This time I left it to do its thing and it finally recovered, much to my relief. I reran Robocopy manually rather than in a .bat file so I could monitor and got everything moved over to my new laptop (whew!)

I've been using both, the old one on off as I get my programs installed on the new one. My question is this: What caused the "Fixing C:...." message? In other threads it was suggested that the hard drive was dying, but I haven't seen evidence of that, EXCEPT now and then a clicking for a moment or two, and then its gone.

Winver 2004, latest build.
