Windows 10: Significant issues Windows 10 1909... SFC, Dism and Update in place all fail

I had not used my personal laptop in a few months yet when I started it up I expected it would run through several updates for my apps, AV and system. After a couple of days I noticed thae Windows failed to install a few updates so I befan troubleshooting. I noticed the last update had been to 1909 which cleared all my restore points. My update history is blank and my Windows Optional Features is missing completely. Error logs were present so I tried to run SFC which failed to run. I tried DISM which failed to locate image source. I tried manually downloading updates by referening the KB numbers in my WU settings and they all failed stating they were the wrong version.


While troubleshooting my system experienced a freeze abd BSOD which took 3 days to recover from. When I used a USB repair drive I could not locate the operating system at all during the 3 day BSOD event


I have also run Check Disk as well as reset the WU service settings clearing the Software Distribution folder first


Nothing has worked and some of the error reports indicate the Driver Store is corrupt or missing as well as a few other components.


Please advise what additional steps I can take over and above those mentioned above

The Users list compared to the Profile list you posted earlier tell me there is not an issue with Users (a known issue where there is a profile in the list, but not actual User folder).

The error code suggests corruption in the CBS manifest:
Try these steps one at time until the issue is resolved or you run out of steps.

Is Windows activated?
No? Activate Windows 10

Launch Command Prompt (Admin)
enter the following line
reg query HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate /s
If DisableWindowsUpdateAccess REG_DWORD 0x1

launch regedit
navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
change the value of DisableWindowsUpdateAccess to 0
exit regedit
exit Command Prompt

Launch Windows Update

Try the next suggestion if the issue is not resolved.

Restore health to the component store
DISM - Repair Windows 10 Image
Step 6. To Use DISM /RestoreHealth /Source:wim Command
- OR -
Step 7. To Use DISM /RestoreHealth /Source:esd Command
Check System Files
SFC Command - Run in Windows 10
Read the front material, then
follow >> OPTION THREE <<
To Run SFC /SCANNOW Command in Windows 10

If there are integrity issues reported on screen,
Follow the instructions in >> OPTION FIVE <<
To View Only the "SFC" Scan Results from the CBS.LOG

If there are no integrity errors, Launch Windows Update

Try the next suggestion if the issue is not resolved.

Paste the following line into the address bar of File Explorer
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\TroubleshootingLaunch System and Security > Fix problems with Windows Update
Press Advanced
Select Run as administrator
Press Next

Can't get SFC and DISM to work anymore on Win10

Ok, can someone help me out because this crap is starting to piss me off. There was once a time when you could simply run SFC and DISM to check Windows files integrity and if there were any problems found with the local files, Windows repaired it automatically. The reason why I want to run this is because I'm getting stupendously huge amount of errors and warnings in Event Viewer, but I don't want to run refresh because it'll mess up tons of apps.

Commands I used:
sfc /scannow
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Fast forward few years and we now have glorious Windows 10. Trying to run the same tools, they find errors but stubbornly refuse to fix ANYTHING. What's the god damn point of it then?

Sfc finds issues but can't repair them and DISM constantly bitches how it can't find the source. All this used to work directly in Windows 7, but in Win 10, nothing. This was one of the best features to get OS back in good state and they go and ruin it. Because Microsoft!

Nothing worked. And they keep mentioning install.wim where my Windows image downloaded from Microsoft itself! only carries install.esd which I can't seem to use with anything.

I've also tried this tool:

Which again wants .wim file and refuses to work with esd.

Thanks for your detailed response. These steps are to address the update issue. As you said, I can live with that since the OS is working.

My main concern is that SFC failed revealing that some files are corrupt. In particular the fhengine.dll. I dont want compromised system as my son uses to play online games. Mcafee seems to be forgiving a lot and finds nothing even if system has something
as happened a few weeks ago and I reinstalled win 10.

Do you or anybody see an issue with SFC and DISM as above ? I would at least like to fix the SFC issue.
