Windows 10: SKU / Part Number for Windows 10 Professional 32/64 bit FPP (DVD)

Dear All

I want to know and clarify what SKUs / Part Numbers that Microsoft has ever released for any country (any SKU / part number will do) for any of these 2 products :

1) Windows 10 Professional 64 bit License FPP (retail) for 1 PC (Media DVD/CD, not flashdrive)
2) Windows 10 Professional 32 bit License FPP (retail) for 1 PC (Media DVD/CD, not flashdrive)

So that I can search for the correct SKU / Part Number for those products on an international e-commerce site like Amazon, Ebay, or others. And also in order to avoid being scammed.

I don't know the correct SKU / part number for those products but I'm assuming someone here might have 1 of those 2 products and knows the answer.

I'm sorry, but to clarify what I want is clearly to know what are the SKU's (not part number because they turn out to be a different code) of Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (Media DVD). Different media supposed to have different SKU's albeit it install the same version
of software.

For what purpose do I wan't to know the SKU is another matter that I don't need it to be discussed here.

 

That's easy. There is no genuine Microsoft FPP of Windows 10 Home or Pro that is DVD. It's USB flash drive or download.

 

Then NavyLCDR, you are stating that Microsoft never produced a windows 10 home / pro in media DVD. How can you be so sure of this?

If it comes with a DVD from Microsoft - it was originally with an OEM license.

And has anyone else provided you with a Microsoft Genuine sku or part # for a retail license DVD?

 

Haha well I guess not.. I already did assumed Microsoft never released a Retail (FPP license) version of Windows 10 Pro / Home in Media DVD, It's true that there are no pictures or information regarding it in Microsoft websites rite now, but I wasn't so sure of how it was before, meaning in the past, whether there were any info regarding it. (perhaps they decided to not sell in Media DVD anymore so the information was deleted, but perhaps it was just because I wasn't sure) Micr*s*ft is either too coy or are unclear about this kind of information....

 

My 2 cents. IMHO, it makes sense to move away from optical media. Lots of devices don't have an optical drive for one thing. But almost always have at least one USB port. Plus its a "download it" world for the most part. Buy online then download from a link. Good or bad that's where things are headed. Optical media is easily damaged/scratched, even a finger print is an issue. Thumb drives are pretty reliable as long as they don't go in with your wash, *Wink. The only downside I see to Windows 10 on a thumb drive (Microsoft supplied read only), is its going to get out dated over time. It will be yesterdays build. Same deal if you buy a DVD though. The quick update cycle of new builds is going to make your DVD outdated in as little as 6 months.

 

Forgot to mention, one big advantage to a USB install, is its many many times faster than doing it via optical media.

 

The thing about USB Flashdrive installation is that i'm abit skeptic about the "it is read-only" part. For DVD's I rarely doubt, because if your DVD driver can only read, than it is read only. But for USB Flashdrive i guess it depends on how the flashdrive implements its read-only protocol, whether it is through mechanical means (by a switch or something else that physically prevents the PC to write to the Flashdrive) or through digital means (meaning the read-only is achieved by means of codes only and can still be compromised by malwares, virus, and other stuffs). But I found that the Flashdrive installation for windows 10 home/pro doesn't come with a mechanical switch, so how does it achieved its read only function? In my opinion, for DVD, looking it in this manner, is much more reliable..and besides there are DVDs that are 20 years old and still it can be read smoothly without any errors..and as for Flashdrives AFAIK there is the number of write cycles that you have to think about in terms of data longevity..

 

It's likely to contain a ROM chip instead of actual flash memory. That would also eliminate the drive losing it's contents over time the way true USB flash drives do. Many people have tried to crack the write protection on a Microsoft Windows 10 USB flash drive and I have not heard of anyone successful yet. I'll bet if you cracked it open, you would find a ROM chip in there.

 

Perhaps because anyone successful in doing that may not want to publicize his success...but still, the write protection is achieved using just code rite? You may not have heard of anyone successful yet doesn't mean that it doesn't exist, now or possibly in the future...

 

It could be unalterable ROM as NavyLCDR says. The code is burned into the chip and can't be rewritten. Like the instruction set is burned into your CPU. Its permanent. The advantage to that is the user can't accidentally erase it or corrupt it. It also can't get infected by a virus as it can't be written too. Disadvantage is you can't update it with a newer build of Windows 10. I see why Microsoft did that way, it does make a lot of sense. They just switched from DVD to thumb drive and locked it down to make it safe.

 

I would really like to get my hands on one and crack it open to see what's inside. Not going to go out and Buy Windows 10 to get one though. *Wink

 

I would say there is an equal chance of someone opening the retail box, replacing the DVD in the box with a fake, and resealing the box as there is someone opening the retail box, taking the USB drive out of it, altering the USB drive, putting back in the box and resealing it.

So, if tampering is your concern - then download the ISO file directly from Microsoft, and hope that no one has broken into Microsoft servers and tampered with the ISO file, or intercepts the download on the way to your computer and tampers with it.
